Saturday’s Regional Quarterfinals: Final scores and what we learned

What We Learned...

1. Kenton’s Maty Mauk is must-see TV: Anyone who claims this kid has the numbers he does because of the system he’s in and because his dad’s the head coach and his brother calls the plays, needs to go see him in person. Incredible. Saturday night Mauk broke his brother Ben’s national career passing yardage mark of 17,364 in a 74-22 win over Wellington in a Division IV Region 14 quarterfinal. Mauk finished the night 27-of-29 for 505 yards and a state record tying nine TDs. He also completed his first 19 passes to set another state record for consecutive completions and now has 17,869 passing yards. Mauk also owns national marks for total yards (21,046), passing attempts (1,974), completions (1,272) and touchdown passes (208). Against Wellington, Mauk ran the ball 11 times for 93 yards to give him 598 total yards in the game.

2. The sMACk: Yesterday we noted that the Midwest Athletic Conference was 45-1 all-time in regional quarterfinal games against non-Mac foes. Make that 48-1. Delphos St. John’s Marion Local and Minster dominated their opponents Saturday (outscored them 156-13) to advance to regional semifinals. No. 1 ranked DSJ, the defending D-VI state champion, beat Ottawa Hills 55-0; Marion Local beat Lockland 55-0; and Minster beat Springfield Central Catholic 48-13.

3. In D-I Rematches Reign: Five of the eight regional semifinal games in D-I will feature rematches from regular season games. In Region I Mentor and Solon and St. Edward and St. Ignatius play each other again, while in Region 3 Hilliard Davidson and Upper Arlington and Pickerington Central and Gahanna Lincoln meet again. In Region 4 Colerain and St. Xavier square off again.

4. Long time coming: Despite being in Wayne County, Orrville hasn’t played a team from the Wayne County Athletic League in football since 1981 when it beat Creston Norwayne 29-0 in the season opener. That streak is over. Orrville will face that same Norwayne squad in a D-IV Region 13 quarterfinal after both won their regional quarterfinals.
