Friday's Regional Quarterfinals: Final scores and what we learned

What We Learned...

1. Don’t draw a Midwest Athletic Conference team in the first round:  Word of warning for teams in Division V and VI next year – don’t draw a MAC team in the first round. If you do you are going home. Friday, Coldwater and Versailles both won Division V Region 20 road games by the combined score of 79-28. That makes the MAC’s all-time record in regional quarterfinals against non-MAC opponents a staggering 45-1. Coldwater beat Covington 31-7, while Versailles (a No. 8 seed) beat No. 1 seed West Liberty-Salem 48-21. MAC teams Marion Local, Delphos St. John’s and Minster all face non-conference opponents in the D-VI regional quarterfinals Saturday. As far as the second round goes, the MAC is 48-6 all-time in Regional Semifinals against non-MAC teams.

2. There will be a new state champion in Division II: Maple Heights, which has played in the last two D-II state finals, fell 22-12 to East Cleveland Shaw. The Mustangs were riding a 23-game win streak until losing their season finale 20-12 to Cleveland Heights. Now MH is on a two-game slide.

3. D-V is wide open: Biggest upset of the night? How about in D-V Region 18 where Findlay Liberty-Benton toppled No. 1 ranked Lima Central Catholic. The Eagles beat the T-Birds 45-35 and turned D-V in to total chaos. With LCC out and Youngstown Ursuline not in the playoffs, the division is anyone’s to win.

4. Trotwood-Madison solidified itself as the favorite for the D-II title: With Howland and Maple Heights bowing out and Kings struggling (beat Harrison 10-7), Trotwood-Madison reaffirmed itself as the state title favorite in D-II with a 53-7 win over Hamilton Ross. Trotwood led 27-0 less the six minutes into the game and had more points than Ross had total yards until late in the third quarter. Trotwood returned two blocked punts for TDs.

5. Kent Roosevelt’s ride continues: Need a team to cheer for? Here’s one. Kent Roosevelt lost BCS prospect and team leader Ryan Anderson before the season to a rare form of bone cancer. Anderson, a standout OL and one of Ohio’s Top 35 prospects before his diagnosis, saw his bright football future end before his senior season even began. Roosevelt, learning to adjust to Anderson on the sideline and not in the huddle, dropped its first game to Canfield 42-21. Since then, though, the Rough Riders have responded with 10 straight wins, including Friday’s 21-7 home victory over undefeated and No. 3 ranked Howland.

6. Thurgood Marshall’s first playoff win a memorable one: Led by senior RB Tavonn Crisp who ran for four TDs, No. 10 ranked Dayton Thurgood Marshall won the first playoff game in program history with a 35-27 win over undefeated and No. 3 ranked Kettering Alter in a D-III Region 12 semifinal. The game, played at Welcome Stadium in Dayton, was the first ever hosted by a Dayton City League school. Thurgood Marshall’s only other playoff appearance came in 2006 when the school was known as Colonel White. Oh yeah...Marshall's only loss? 35-21 to Trotwood-Madison in Week 1.
