Cincinnati Moeller quarterback Andrew Hendrix committed to Notre Dame on Wednesday after visiting South Bend this week. Hendrix picked the Fighting Irish over a wealth of other schools including Ohio State, Miami (Fla) and Tennessee.

Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller High School quarterback Andrew Hendrix was sitting in his car Wednesday when it hit him that he had just made an oral commitment to play football at Notre Dame.

Hendrix, who visited South Bend earlier this week, made the commitment on Wednesday afternoon after he also considered Ohio State, Miami (Fla.) and others. The Cincinnati Enquirer first reported the commitment on Thursday morning.

Hendrix (6-3, 220) is one of the nation’s top quarterbacks in the 2010 class. He had about 20 offers during this past spring, including Ohio State, Tennessee, Miami (Fla.), Louisville, Boston College, Cincinnati, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Michigan State and others.

Hendrix said he slept well in his Cincinnati-area home on Wednesday night after returning from South Bend about 7 p.m. from the two-day visit to the Notre Dame campus.

“I slept like a log, (the decision) was a weight off my shoulders,” Hendrix said.

Hendrix is the second Cincinnati-area player from the 2010 class to commit to the Irish. He joins Cincinnati Elder tight end Alex Welch (6-4, 220), who committed to Notre Dame in late May.

Hendrix said his Moeller teammates and coaches have been nothing but supportive. He said he’s taken some good-natured ribbing from Ohio State and Miami (Fla.) fans, but said they understood his decision 100 percent.

“This has been one of the greatest experiences of my life,” Hendrix said of the recruiting process. “I definitely can’t take anything for granted from anybody.”

Hendrix visited the South Bend campus once before – about three weeks ago - and said he felt comfortable with the environment. He said he was thankful for the opportunity.

“If someone told me six months ago before my first varsity snap that I would commit to Notre Dame, I would say they were wrong,” Hendrix said. “I didn’t think it would happen this fast. I thought I would be one of the last ones (in the senior class) to commit.”

There was much speculation as to whether Hendrix would commit to the Irish this week. Hendrix also considered Ohio State. The Buckeyes received an oral commitment from Wheaton North (Ill.) quarterback Taylor Graham on Tuesday.

Hendrix told the Cincinnati newspaper last week that the recruiting process was taking its toll on him with a consistent amount of media attention, but that he planned to make his decision by early July. He was also considering a visit to Miami (Fla.) in July.
