Mayfield's defense wreaking havoc

Mayfield's defense has been stingy this season, allowing just 61 points in seven games in accumulating a 6-1 record. But the stingiest player just may be safety Matt Shannon.

The Brown University signee has nailed 45 tackles with four for loss, hauled in two interceptions, grabbed two fumbles and defended 10 passes. Shannon's statistics may be even better if he hadn't missed his team's only loss (undefeated Solon, 27-20) with a mild concussion suffered the previous week against Brush.

Just last week, Shannon had 16 tackles (two for loss) with an interception and two defended passes in his team's 28-10 win over Strongsville.

Shannon is taking his game to the defending Ivy League co-champions to play football and study English and Non-Fiction Writing and has been named All-Northeast Ohio Conference Scholar Athlete for the past two seasons.  He is a member of the National Honors Society and maintains a 4.12 GPA. Not bad for a stingy gridder.
