Mauk, who owns several national and state passing records (including career yards and TDs), guided his Wildcats to the Division IV state final by completing 24-of-39 passes for 422 yards and accounting for five TDs (threw for four) in a 36-6 win over Clinton-Massie in the D-IV state semifinals.
Franklin and his Johnstown-Monroe Johnnies lost 59-28 to Norwayne in the other D-IV state semifinal.
Johnstown’s loss brings to a close Franklin’s career, which is one of the best ever by a running back in Ohio.
* Franklin’s 51 total TDs this year ranks No. 2 all-time and is one shy of the state record 52 set by Hubert Bobo of Chauncey-Dover in 1952.
* Franklin’s 49 rushing TDs this year ranks No. 2 all-time and is one shy of the state record 50 set by Maurice Hall (Columbus Brookhaven) in 2000.
* Franklin’s 3,416 rushing yards this year ranks No. 2 all-time and is 23 yards shy of the state record 3,439 set by Bedford Chanel’s Tony Franklin in 2001.
* Franklin is Johnstown’s all-time rushing (5,742 yards) and scoring (73 TDs) career leader.
In his final game, Franklin ran for 320 yards and two touchdowns on 38 carries against Norwayne.
The most impressive thing about him? He fumbled two times all year (339 carries).
Heading into the state semifinals, two teams were playing with heavy hearts.
Last Wednesday night after football practice, Kent Staup, a senior at Delphos St. John’s, left the huddle for the last time. A starting offensive lineman for the Blue Jays, he went home and died due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Less than 24 hours later, Paul McGhee, an Aurora sophomore offensive lineman, passed too. Coming home from an early Thanksgiving Day practice, McGhee perished in a one vehicle wreck. His car struck a tree.
Two players. Two teams. Two days. Too much.
DSJ lost to Marion Local in the D-VI state semifinals on Saturday. Aurora lost to Avon in Friday’s D-II State semifinals.
Prayers and thoughts go out to both families, teams, schools and communities.
MILK AND JJHUDDLE OHIO OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
After Elida went up 21 with less than a minute left in the first half, Jarzab drove the Braves 80 yards in 40 seconds on the ensuing drive and tossed a TD pass with 10 seconds remaining in the half for a 35-21 deficit at half. That started the snowball.
On the opening drive of the second half, Jarzab drove the Braves 65 yards on nine plays and scored on a 9-yard TD run. He gave Shawnee the lead for good on a 68-yard fourth quarter TD.
The Braves are only the second Clark County team (Springfield Catholic Central in 1992) and Central Buckeye Conference team (Urbana in 1983) to advance to the state championship.
