JJHuddle Ohio Wrestling Notes: Ironman preview, Wrestler of the Week & More
The first weekend of the wrestling season is in the books, and there wasn't a
lot of action as teams prepared for the
first full week of the season. There were however some performances of note. What's coming up? Who won last week? And who is the JJH Wrestler of the Week?
WRESTLER OF THE WEEK
Hunter Bray, Dayton Christian, 106, Freshman: In his varsity debut, Bray claimed the title at 106 at the Franklin Invitational, pinning returning state qualifier Brandon Carter of Hillsboro in under a minute before claiming the title with a win over Kyle Bussard of Valley View.
IRONMAN COMING FRIDAY
It will be an interesting Ironman tournament this weekend at Walsh.
Traditional powers Blair Academy, St. Edwards and Graham – for once – don’t dominate the top seeds in each weight class. Blair has three top seeds while St. Eds and Graham each have one.
Brecksville’s Austin Assad is the top seed at 106 while his brother, Aaron, is the second seed at 113.
Of note, Matthew Kolodzik returns to the Buckeye State as a member of the Blair Academy team. An Ohio state champ last year at Miami Valley School, Kolodzik is seeded second behind CVCA’s Nathan Tomasello at 120.
Dean Heil is St. Ed’s lone top seed at 132 and could have a semifinal showdown with Graham’s Micah Jordan – the fourth seed.
Edgar Bright is the second seed at 145, and one of the biggest slights of the tournament – two time Ohio state champ Jacob Danishek of Dayton Christian is seeded ninth. Troy Christian’s Jordan Marshall also may enter with a chip on his shoulder – another slight – seeded ninth.
Bo Jordan is Graham’s only top seeded wrestler, grabbing the top spot at 160. St. Ed’s Domenic Aboundader is seeded second in a stacked 182 where he may face Troy Chrisitan’s BJ Toal (the third seed) in the semis. Add to that Centerville’s Garrett Conner who is a low 11th seed.
Moeller’s Jerry Thornberry is the second seed at 195 and could face Medina Highland’s Adam Kluk (the third seed) in the semis. Massillon Perry’s JoJo Tayse is the second seed at 220 while Chalmer Freauf (Moeller) is the fourth seed.
Wrestling begins at 1 p.m. Friday and continues at 10 a.m. Saturday with finals slated for 6 p.m.
