Regional Finals: Friday Night Final Scores and What We Learned
The third weekend of the Ohio High School Football Playoffs is underway and 12 more teams bowed out Friday. Upsets? Eh. Shockers? Yep? Final Scores? Yep...it's all here. ______________________________________________________________________ What We Learned
1. Clinton-Massie ties state record for points in a season: The Falcons beat Milton-Union 35-7 in the D-IV Region 16 final and now have 731 points this season. That ties the state record set by Marion Pleasant in 2001. The only difference? Pleasant scored 731 in 15 games. Which brings us to this… *Hartley: Undefeated unanimous No. 1 all season long with several big-time BCS recruits and prospects. *Clinton-Massie: Tied the state single-season team record for points in a season tonight (see above). *St. Clairsville: Southeastern/Eastern Ohio’s best shot at a D-IV state title since a couple guys named Magistro and Davis helped Bellaire finish state runner-up back-to-back in 1995-96. *Norwayne: Defending state champions. Game on…Hartley plays Massie. Norwayne plays St. Clairsville. 3. The MAC and the BVC are Ohio's best small school conferences bar none: We stated this week in our prediction of the Delphos St. John’s-McComb game that “Few conferences can compete with MAC, but the Blanchard Valley Conference is one that can hold its own.” We we’re right - kind of. Although we picked DSJ to win the game, we were right that the BVC could hold its own. McComb won 28-21. Guess there’s a reason we had the Panthers ranked No. 1 in the final National Guard JJHuddle D-VI Power Poll. That being said…what’s McComb’s reward for beating a MAC team? Another one. Defending state champion Marion Local awaits in the state semifinals. Also...the Marion-McComb match-up could just be one of two that features a BVC-MAC flavor. If Coldwater and Liberty-Benton win Saturday in their D-V finals, they'll meet next week too. I think it's clear who the top two small school conferences in Ohio are. 4. Ohio State fans better pay attention to D-II: The Final Four in D-II has a distinct OSU flavor. Trotwood-Madison (DB Cam Burrows), New Albany (QB/DB Darron Lee) and Toledo Central Catholic (DB Jayme Thompson) all feature future Buckeyes. 5. D-VI is Top Heavy: Of the four D-VI semifinalists, three (Marion Local, Mogadore and Newark Catholic) have a combined 45 state semifinal appearances. The other – McComb – has one. Newark Catholic (8), Marion Local (5) and Mogadore (3) also have a combined 16 state titles. McComb? It again has one…and counting. Of Note *St. Clairsville senior QB Matt Kinnick threw for 260 yards and four TDs and ran for another score in the Red Devils 37-29 win over Johnstown-Monroe in the D-IV Region 15 final. *Johnstown-Monroe senior QB Tyler Thompson scored all four of his team's TDs in a 37-29 loss to St. Clairsville in the D-IV Region 15 final. Thompson ran for 124 yards and four TDs on 25 carries.
