At Watterson: “It’s always an expectation for us to get to the playoffs"
Watterson made the regional finals last year before falling to rival Columbus DeSales. The Eagles graduated some talent, but this is Watterson we're talking about. The cupboard is not bare.
* Players to watch – LB/RB Matt Redfield (6-0, 220, Sr.), NG Hunter Maynard (6-1, 285, Sr.), WR Connor Geraghty (6-2, 172, Sr.), OL/RB Michael Szaraz (5-10, 175, Sr.), LB Ray Cook (6-1, 188, Sr.), OT T.J. Gilles (6-3, 269, Sr.), DE Justin McCarthy (6-1, 211, Sr.), CB/WR Brad McCurdy (5-11, 162, Sr.), QB Pat Rhomberg (6-1, 190, Sr.), OL/HB Dan Gelpi (6-0, 186, Sr.)
* Outlook – Bishop Watterson kicks off with a huge opening game against Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary.
“Expectations are always high at our place,” head coach Dan Bjelac said. “Depth up front is a concern, where we have more players coming back is probably in skill areas.”
Last year, the team won playoff games against Bellefontaine and Napoleon before falling in the Regional Finals to cross-town rival Columbus St. Francis de Sales 24-10. The two teams will meet again in a much anticipated rematch during Week 7.
Expect the Eagles to lean heavily on some high-caliber recruits like Redfield and Maynard – both of whom have Division I scholarship offers. Redfield and Maynard will be looked to for leadership alongside quarterback Pat Rhomberg.
“Our goal No. 1 is to try to win our league, get to the playoffs, and go from there,” says Bjelac who’s entering his fourth season as head coach. “It’s always an expectation for us to get to the playoffs.”
* Schedule – We’ve mentioned it once, and we’ll mention it again: Bishop Watterson’s toughest game of the year will come against Columbus St. Francis de Sales – the team that knocked them out of the regional finals in the playoffs last fall. Expect the intensity of this cross-town rivalry to kick up a few notches when they rematch during Week 7.
