Williams from Toledo Scott or Robinson from Maumee, two of the greatest coaches in Northwest Ohio history, aside from being the two most passionate and motivating men on the court.

Mike Riley: Vanlue, Bellefontaine, Louisville, Elyria, and Canton McKinley, with stops in between at Southern Illinois U. and St Louis U. Best record in history of three of those high schools, and broke the "McKinley Jinx" in '84, leading the "Dogs" to first ever title, after 20+ empty trips to the dance. Retired now, but looking for small school job, just to put on the whistle, and teach the game again. Some coaches can never get it out of their system, and he's one of them. Anybody out there looking to turn their program around? Coach Riley's your man.

For Canton South, we have, of course had the legendary Charles "Red" Ash for I think 37 or 38 years. Bob DeLap replaced him and had some great teams as well, although he just couldn't get over the hump and BEAT McKINLEY!!!!! (He coached the year of the 5-OT Class AAA district final game) Henry Cobb has also done his share of winning games as well.

We have had 10 district championships over the years. Does anybody wonder how many regional and state appearances we would have had, had there been 4 divisions way back when.

myron and pj ...

WN did beat Zanesville in the regional finals in '94. The next year, they met in the state semifinals.

As for Seth Martin, I distinctly remember that he caught an outlet pass "between the circles" in the front court near the end of the third quarter vs. WN and drilled a long shot to beat the buzzer. It was a real momentum boost headed to the fourth quarter.

His banked-in free-throw occurred in the overtime vs. Cleveland Heights in the final, providing the winning margin for the state title.

It was a magical tournament run for the Blue Devils, one where we felt a special hand was reaching down to help Zanesville shock everyone in the final four.

Thanks, Windy.

Definitely agree with Charlie Huggins and JVR.

Would like to add Richie Longaberger from Dresden JayHawk/Dresden Tri-Valley. Got the most out of each and every one of his players. Offensively his teams were some of the most fundamentally sound teams I've ever seen. Defensively, they were just fun to watch and teams hated playing against them.

Coach Reese wasn't just a basketball coach. That was just the most public thing he did. His students loved him. He had this ability to make a friend in a short amount of time and make friends out of enemies. He changed the culture, mindset, and ethos of 1/2 a county and beyond. The man left a legacy that is massive.

I have amazing memories of what Coach did with his runts, but my favorite was around 99-00 he had a starting 5 at or under 5'11. The post was 5'10". The Garaway Pirates had a college line up that year in terms of size with Andreas, Mallerne, Renner, etc. They were something like 6'10", 6'8", 6'6", 6'4" and 6' - and all those guys were very good players. Hiland beat them in Berlin by 20 with full court pressure, fast break points, and 3's. On paper there was no way Hiland should have even been on the court with them. That's a great coach right there.

Bob Krizancic of Mentor....his system makes teams with superior height/athleticism struggle; gets players through system to buy in.
