Default Best all time Central Ohio football teams - 10-31-2012, 10:39 PM

There have been some great Central Ohio football teams through the years. Lets hear who everyone thinks the best teams have been, regardless of division, school size, or year.

Division I- 2006 Hilliard Davidson. 2007 Coffman
Division II- 2004 Brookhaven
Division III- 2007 Big Walnut. 2008-2009 Desales
Division IV- 2010 Bishop Hartley, 2011 Johnstown
Division V- 2007 Bishop Ready
Division VI- 2007 Newark Catholic

These are the best teams I have seen play, first hand in each division.

2004 Beechcroft - Only loss was 15-2 defeat against (15-0) Brookhaven, their closest game all year. Didn't make playoffs, but was stacked with D1 talent in D3.
2008 Eastmoor - State runner up
2011 Marion-Franklin - Lost to state champion Trotwood Madison 47-44

2009 Marion-Franklin knocked off #1 seed Louisville (I believe they were AP #1 too). Brookhaven knocked off #2 seed Logan. MF and Haven played for the region 7 championship that year.

2003 was a good year for the City League overall. #8 seed Beechcroft beat #1 seed Big Walnut in the first round of D3 playoffs. Three teams made it in D2, Walnut Ridge, Independence and Brookhaven. Independence and Brookhaven played for the region 7 championship that year.

Honorable mention....
2008 Beechcroft - Posted 7 shutouts, gave up 32 points the entire regular season, averaged 47 ppg. Lost double overtime playoff game to Marion-Franklin 34-28.

1985-86 DeSales. They went 14-0 with a state championship in '85 under Pusateri and then went 10-0 the following year under Mauro, only to miss the playoffs (fewer divisions and only top 4 teams taken at that time). They went on to win their next 4 games in '87 for a 28 game winning streak...snapped by Logan I believe on a DeSales missed FG at the end.

Upper Arlington teams through the 1960's into the early 70's were pretty potent too. There was a stretch from 1964 through 1971 that the Golden Bears went 75-3-0. This included 6 league titles ( 2 CBL and 4 COL ) and 3 State Championships. The 1966 and 67 seasons were played as an independent. Two of those seasons (64 & 65) were only 9 games each.

Upper Arlington: Home of the Golden Bears and 124 State Titles.

The Upper Arlington teams of the mid-late 60's were unreal under Moorhead they only lost a couple of game in a span of five years or so. One of those losses were to the 1966 Watterson team who I feel were the best team I have seen. Amazing that a school of 1000 kids won the state in football before there were divisions.

Had to bring up that 1966 debacle didn't ya????

Watty was in their infancy back then. If you'd have taken all the Arlington kids off that Eagle's team, they probably wouldn't have fielded a football team back then..... Just sayin'.....

Maybe not the best ever, but surely an honorable mention:

2006 New Albany team (8 seed)

- Upset #1 Cincinnati Indian Hill in first round
- Destroyed Gallia Academy in second round
- Upset #2 St. Francis Desales in Region Finals 10-6

Could have given any team in Central Ohio a run for their money that year, minus Hilliard Davidson.

St. Andrew's and IC were the feeder schools that produced the most talent back in the day in 65 and 66 the Eagles had 9 players that went on to play division 1 football. The UA team in 2000 had 4 guys who went on to play D-1 ball.

There was an UA team in the early 80's, it may have been 1981, who was undefeated in the regular season then lost to Moeller, I think in the state semis. That team had a great regular season and had good players all over the field, especially at defensive tackle.

That's the one. Other players of note were Grim, Kidwell, Millet, Decker, Morrow, Thompson, Wilhelm, Hinesman, Utgard, Card, Souder, Eppert. It was a team that played a tough schedule but had trouble creating any offense against Moeller. Defense was great all year.

Many said Brookhaven was undisciplined. They were disciplined, but the fact is they were so freakishly talented in 2004 that they could beat any team on talent alone. Closest game all year was to Beechcroft 15-2. Game was 9-2 with Beechcroft going in for the score, Brookhaven returned INT at goal line for a TD to end the game. Beechcroft missed the D3 playoffs at 9-1, Brookhaven ran through the state tournament, literally.

Many people forget that in order for 2006 Davidson to get to the state final they had to beat Colerain who at the time was undefeated and ranked #2 in the nation. Colerain steamrolled teams that year and nobody gave Davidson a chance vs them. Eugene Clifford and company were held in check and Davidson won 10-7. The state final vs Mentor was one of the best state finals I've seen (and actually their 2009 win over Glenville is up there too). Davidson ended up ranked #10 in the nation when all was said and done. Not sure where that ranks all-time vs other Central Ohio teams but it has to be up there as one of the best and definitely put Central Ohio back on the map in D1.
