Others will likely disagree, but we've seen this phenomenon with the 'Rocks before. I noticed it first in '09. I know others will chime in that they lost Stoudt and that changed things, but I think it was broader than that. That '09 team came out absolutely on fire. Absolutely
rolled some very good teams in Liberty, Brookhaven, and Groveport (w/ Leveon Bell). They continued at a high level, even with Caldwell at the helm, through week 9.
They played flat against an extremely mediocre UA team and came out really flat against an overmatched Springfield team, until their #'s wore Springfield down. They tightened up and got by a very good Westerville South team (despite being without their best player from both O and D), then got pretty well dominated against Davidson in the R3 title game. They were simply not playing at the same level in the last few weeks than they were in the first few weeks.
I'd argue that a somewhat similar pattern has played out each year since. Fading at the end instead of peaking at the end.
Maybe the UA game was an aberration and Coffman will turn it on again. However, the UA upset came on the heels of a close call against a very average Liberty team.
We'll see how it plays out.
