Default Spotting the ball - 09-28-2012, 10:43 PM

A reciever catches the ball while leaping in the air. The defender hits him while in the air and pushes him back two yards while tackling him. Where do you spot the ball?

He doesn't CATCH the ball until he touches the ground. Assuming he hangs on until the touches the ground, it's spotted where he first establishes possession.

So, contrary to what many think, it is not the same as forward progress on a running play. Correct?

No, it's the same. As long as he completes the catch by hanging on to the ball until he comes down, the ball is spotted where he first gained possession.

Then if a defender catches a leaping receiver who has caught a pass but not yet gained possession on the field of play, carries him into the end zone and then drops him to the ground, would the defense be awarded a safety?

If he's caught a pass, then he's gained possession.

OK, then.

The catch is completed once he hits the ground.

However, he's awarded forward progress at the point where the defender first begane his "carry" of the defender.

No safety.

This is supported by Interpretation by the NFHS
