Please explain a backward pass. was at game friday and what I thought was a backward pass and a live ball was ruled an incomplete pass.

A backward pass is a lateral basically. The ball must travel behind the person throwing the lateral for it to be considered a backward pass.

In that case, the official most likely determined that the ball went forward, not backward.

Had it happen again Friday night. Backward pass dropped and the receiver picked it up and ran for a good gain. Defense stopped playing because they thought it was an incomplete pass.
Know the rules and play to the whistle.

A backwards pass is any pass that is not forward. If the pass is parallel to the LOS or backwards, it is a backwards pass.

As for the play you saw, evidently the officials disagreed with you.

There's no such thing as "a lateral."

ART. 5 . . . A backward pass is a pass thrown with its initial direction parallel with or toward the runner's end line.
