Default R.I.P., Cedar Point's Space Spiral, 1965-2013 - 09-13-2012, 07:53 AM

The younger generations to come will have fond memories of riding the winged coaster on their first visit to Cedar Point, but who will be left to mourn the passing of the Space Spiral?

Was watching a history of Cedar Point on WOSU-TV recently, and the old-timers mentioned going on a steamship between Port Clinton and Cedar Point, and how technology and regulations caused its demise. I felt something similar watching video of the demolition this morning:

I can remember my first trip up the Spiral. What a fantastic view. Peaceful and serene. I was sorry to see it go. It was a significant part of my memories of Cedar Point.

I think that things like this disprove the old quote that says "the more things change, the more they stay the same". In this case, it will never be exactly the same to those of my generation who rode the Spiral and have fond remembrances of it.

Being from Sandusky the SS was long an icon for the park. While I don't know that it out-lived its usefulness it seems to me that the company was less and less willing to maintain the interior of the cabin, the AC wasn't working the last three times I was on the ride.

Used to love going to CP. Dont think I went up in that more than once though.

I still remember as a kid being excited going there. Ya pull into the parking lot and the Blue Streak towered above in the corner of the park.

Now wtih all the other huge rides that dwarf it ya barely notice it!

I probably went there for the first time in about '62. The Mill Stream Race was a big deal. The Blue Streak was scary!

Took a date there in '68, and had a great time. Swam, rode, and rode and rode, walked all over. Funny, my age was the flip of my age now - 16 and 61. Pleasant and happy memories.

<~~~Also from Sandusky. CP was having more and more problems with the SS....the interior glass (plexiglass), the seating, the AC as mentioned, plus the track the spiral rode on was in need of major repair or replacement. Sometimes the cabin would not rotate, sometimes it would rotate shakily. CP would have to pump a lot of money into it just to keep it operating.

With the plans for the new coaster, they just planned accordingly.

I have fond memories, like taking a date the summer after I graduated. We got into the park and I bought all day ride tickets total cost was $3.50 each. The summer of 63, what great memories.

19AL63,

Couldn't agree with you more about the Summer of '63, also the year I graduated from HS. May have been there the same time that summer after HS and prior to starting college that fall. Some of the best memories ever involved taking a date to Cedar Point. I can't imagine a more exciting and fun time to be a teenager than in the sixties.

Having grown up in northern Ohio, a trip to Cedar Point each summer back in the late 60s and early 70s was a must for our family. Many great memories of that place, including the Space Spiral. Sorry to see it go.

Every Summer, right at the end of the conditioning program and the first week of official State sanctioned practice, I would take my team to Cedar Point for the day. I was a lot younger back then and we would arrive when it opened and leave at closing time. I would go around with the kids a time or two and ride the first car of every coaster. Not because I necessarily wanted to but because of the pressure put on me by the members of my team. I loved it as much or perhaps even more than the kids did.

I'm still coaching but I haven't re-instituted that "bonding" activity with my new school (retirement position). I may try it next Summer. I did notice that in the last few years I seemed to spend more time watching shows at 'Lil"s, which wasn't all bad either.

I am also very impressed with the number of '63 grads we have.

Go Rams!!!!

I was at CP last weekend. That place is great. I would take it over Disney World every time. The Millenium Force is an awesome ride.

Another good reason to live in the Buckeye State and have such a treasure so close to us, wattersoneagle.

Used to go on the Space Spiral just to cool off and relax before standing in line for another coaster.
