The death penalty is not vengeance; it is justice - an ultimate price for the ultimate crime against man. You could have said the same thing about any prison sentence for a lesser crime - it serves no purpose except vengeance. If true, then why do we still have prisons?
Also, have not found a reference where Georgia was founded to give life sentences to murderers. Do you have a link? Would be interesting to read about.

I have to side with DGutley - I'm not seeing this as you have described, and have not seen reference to a debtor's prison in Georgia. Rather, Oglethorpe's intent was to found a colony formed by debtors from England - and he ended up shipping hardly any to America because he found enough volunteers who were not otherwise so oppressed - certainly no prisoners from the British version of Death Row were involved - and thus the Georgia baby boom you mentioned.
