Smile What are Your Favorite Olympic Moments of All Time? - 07-25-2012, 01:20 PM

Let's hear from some Fellow Huddlers on your favorite "Olympic Moments" of all time!

3 of of mine: (1) Mary Lou Retton pulls out gold medal in vaulting for USA
with "perfect vault" on last attempt;
(2) "Dream Team" awesome in 1992 Olympic Basketball!
and
(3) One American (Michael Phelps) wins 8 gold medals in the last Olympics
in swimming (with the help of his Relay Pals pulling
outstanding once-in-a-lifetime swims, and winning one
event by .01 of a second)!

Do you believe in Miracles?.... Nothing can top that for an American.
Mary Lou Retton
Michael Phelps

Dream team was awesome to watch but was there any question of the outcome?... so that doesnt make my list.

Smile Thanks for the Quick Response, Fellow Huddler! - 07-25-2012, 01:45 PM

Thank you for the quick response, and I MUST agree: The USA "Miracle Win"
by the College-age Hockey Team over the professional Russian Team HAS to be one of the GREATEST UPSETS of All Time!

1968 Summer Oympics
Tommie Smith(gold) and John Carlos(bronze) 200 meters. Raising their fists to support Human Rights. Australian Peter Norman(silver) wore an American civil rights badge to support them.
Bob Beamon's Long Jump record(still an Olympic record).
Dick Fosbury's Flop for Gold

1980 Summer Games in Moscow - a Sports Illustrated photo of a high jumper or pole vaulter from Poland standing on the pad and giving the Italian salute to the crowd after clearing the bar. I should have bought that issue and framed the photo.

a nice coach probably doesn't allow her to take that vault, but to me it was the gutsiest thing i've ever seen in sports and that includes football (although it probably excludes ronnie lott cutting off his broken pinky to play the bengals in the superbowl). if she applied for a job i would hire her on the spot based on that vault.

Another vote for Wottle's 800 Meter victory. Perhaps the best race I have ever seen anywhere, anytime.

For Summer Games, 1976 USA boxing team was unforgettable GOOD (as opposed to '72 Olympic basketball team unforgettable BAD). Sugar Ray Leonard was phenomenal. Have to also agree with '68 Bob Beamon. Kerri Strug and Mary Lou are good selections too. Usain Bolt last time around blew me away.

How can anyone say anything other than Miracle on Ice? That is my greatest sporting moment of all time, Olympics or not.

Even though it was tainted, seeing Ben Johnson and Carl Lewis running the 100 and 200 was a sight to behold.

Bowling Green's Dave Wottle, wearing his signature golf hat, coming from last place over the last 200 meters to beat the Kenyan and the Russian and winning Gold in the 800 M in Munich, West Germany. I can still hear Jim McKay on the broadcast saying with 200 meters to go "Stand by for the Dave Wottle kick!!"

Michael Phelps edging Covic in the 100 M Butterfly in Beijing to win Gold and keep alive his hope for breaking Mark Spitz's record and winning 8 Gold Medals in one Olympics!!
