Unhappy Question on Open Enrollment? - 04-17-2012, 08:39 PM

I was thinking about transferring my daughter to another school next year.

She will be a Freshman would be playing Highschool fastpitch next Spring.

Would she have to sit out if I took her from one public school to another?

If she is starting her 9th grade year at the high school of your choice she will not need to sit.

She would have to sit only if she transfered after the start of her 9th grade year.

OK so if you transfer after the ninth grade then you are ineligiable for a year?
I think that is the way I read it.

go to 'bylaw situations requiring commissioner's approval.'

seriously. people do this all of the time, but you have to go through the proper channels and be above board. they're not above following you home to see where you really live. having said that i know most of them to be reasonable people.

Contact the OHSAA and the AD/superintendent at the school you're transferring to. Don't take our word for anything.

Here's another question while we are on the topic...

Let's say a kid is finishing up 9th grade at a school that does NOT offer football and wants to transfer to a school that offers football IN ORDER TO play football.

Does he have to sit out a year?

Yes, he has to sit out one year. (Unless he is transfering to a private school.) He can practice with the team but he can not play in the game.

Transfer rules are the same for private and public. It just amazes me that people don't know that.

Yes, the only way he could transfer, and not sit out, is if his school does not offer any sports at all.

I'm pretty sure that you may transfer from private to public, and not sit out, but you cannot go from public to private. At least that is the way it was a few years ago. So the rules are not the same for both.

I believe if you attend a private school and transfer back to the public school in the district which you reside in, you do not have to sit out a year. I know it was that way a few years ago but it may have changed. You can't just transfer to any public school.
My main point is, there is no advantage for private schools when it comes to transferring.

Actually not true. Doesn't matter if they offer sports or not. Ineligible.

4-7-2 - Exception 11 – School District Completely Discontinues all Sports Programs
EXCEPTION 11 — During the period of time, and only if, a school district ceases to sponsor its entire
interscholastic athletic programs, a student from that district may transfer to any other school district/system
and have her/his eligibility restored upon application to the Commissioner’s Office. Furthermore, if
the district from which such student transferred resumes with its sponsorship of interscholastic programs
and the student wishes to transfer back to the district from which she/he transferred, he/she may do so and
have her/his eligibility restored in accordance with Exception 6 of Bylaw 4-7-2, and notwithstanding Bylaw
4-7-3, provided the transfer back occurs prior to the start of the next school year following the school year in
which resumption of sponsorship of interscholastic programs occurred.
In consideration of all applications for the restoration of eligibility pursuant to this Exception, the
Commissioner’s Office shall give due consideration to all factors relating to the transfer and particularly the
timing of the transfer in relation to the effective date on which sponsorship of interscholastic athletics ceases

That is differnt than what was oriinally said. I responded to a statement about a school that didn't offer sports, not a school that eliminated sports. There are schools out there that do not, and never have, offered sports. For instance, all the online academies. Sudents at those schools would be ineligible if they transfered. In fact, many haver been ruled such already.
