I have been in other ball parks where people start yelling or complaining as soon as a highly paid star doesn't deliver in a key situation. Also, when Prince got his first hit of the game and his 1000th hit of his career, the crowd gave him a standing ovation. They understand even though it is his first year with the Tigers he has long been a member of the Tiger's family.
But the big "positive" I noticed yesterday was the fact there were dozens of Red Sox fans at the part yesterday, they seemed to be treated with respect. We had a large group of them sitting about 10 rows in front of us and they felt comfortable in standing and cheering their team. During a time when we hear of opposing fans being verbally abused or assaulted due to loyalty to their team, opponents can go to Comerica knowing they will be safe. There was some good-natured jawing going on, but it was in fun from what I saw.
I read an atricle several years ago where they did a poll of MLB players. They said that St. Louis and Detroit fans were the most knowledgeable fans in their respective leagues. I would tend to agree with that poll and am proud to say I am a Tigers fan.
GO TIGERS!!!!

I went to a game last year against the Rangers and sat in front of a couple of Ranger fans and had a real nice talk with them. Very similar experience in 2004 with some Royal fans. We also had a game in 2010 against the Indians were there was a lot of jawing back and forth, but all in all it was good natured and never close to being violent.
Sure you get the occasional drunk idiot who ruins it for everyone, but all in all I'd agree with you. Our fans are great and seem to understand that not everyone likes the same things we do. If they're not hurting us by rooting for their guys, then really what's the big deal?

5 of 6 against Boston and Tampa and really should be 6 of 6 considering that's a game Verlander finishes off 99 times out of 100. Can't ask for much more than that. Now we go on the road against the 2 teams who actually looks like they could contend for a while so far. Sure would be nice to keep this up at least through then.

Hopefully, going on the road will not disturb the nice momentum the Tigers have established for themselves. We have 5 out of 6 and none of the wins belong to Justin. That will change on this road trip. We need to keep playing at the level that we are capable of. There is always someone who wants to win as much or more than the Tigers do. St. Louis comes immediately to mind.

Now I've seen everything.....White Sox shorted the rear of the batter box six inches to move batters six inches closer to the pitcher. In the first inning, the first two tigers didn't notice but Cabrerra balked at the cheating and the umps called out the ground crew to re-chalk a correct box. We all know it was a home team cheat. Maybe Peavy needed to be closer to the big boys.

I know that the Tigers are very good this season but the thing that always seems to slow the Tigers and cause their house to start burning down a little seems to be happening right now. All of a sudden great pitching from people the Tigers usually handle and the momentum is slowed. Last year, in that great season, the Tigers would find a way to score for their good pitchers but JV has had two pretty good starts and nothing to show for it. I'm not in any panic mode or anything close to it. I'm just saying in my 55 years or so of following the Tigers, I recognize the symptoms.
We need a breakout game from our offense today to get us back on schedule. I also understand that JL is looking at a lot of new pitchers right now but we need to get on a roll again. Go Bengals!!!!!

Floyd's a Tiger killer, has been for years. Nothing big yesterday. Peavy when on can beat anyone. Just 2 bad days. All it hurts is we can't go wire-to-wire in first anymore lol.
Win today and get on a little roll again and those 2 losses will be forgotten.
Only 2 things worrying me. No starter winning a game in the first 8(part of that is bad luck, some is a couple of bad starts, but if we need late inning dramatics all season there's a problem), and Daniel Schlereth still managing to find a way to con Leyland into letting him in the games. He's just terrible.

Agree on that. Jimmy has always said "if they're on roster then they can do the job" or some such. Look how long he stayed with Penny last year.

I sure hope the Tigers can get 11 wins & 180 innings out of there #5 starter this year, no matter what his final line reads. I'll bet they don't.
As bad as he was, he really wasn't bad all the time.

I hope that JV doesn't have to work this hard for every victory this season. It was a nice win because every win is nice, but it was a tough one. Justin threw 131 pitches in this complete game effort and his last pitch, a 100 mph fast ball that shaved the inside corner at the knees was a pitch for the ages. (The pitch before the last one was also clocked at 100 mph.) Not a bad day's work!

On one hand I love showing your ace that you remember what he did last year and trying to give him the confidence that he's the guy. On the other, it's just a little early for a 131 pitch outing. In the end I'll take the win but either Verlander's going to have to figure out how to close games out again or Leyland is going to need to figure out when the right time to pull him is.

I always used to think that JL would pull pitchers a little early. It was almost scripted that at a certain pitch count or inning, he would go get the starter and bring in the closer. Now, since it was the guy he trusts to close out what he starts, JV stayed to the almost bitter end. I would agree that the pen is a pretty good one and yesterday may have been one of those times to use that pen and give JV a little rest....but the result was good, although we will obviously need JV all season and when we can rest him, we probably should.

On a day of the Inchon landing, Sep 16 1950, my dad took me to see the Tigers play the Yanks in the last of a 3 game series. The Tigers were in the race with the Yanks all the way into September. Unfortunately, it was Dizzy Trout vs Whitey Ford and Dizzy really wasn't that great in the tail end of his career. The bad guys won. We sat behind the left field screen which was my favorite place in years to come. Cheap seats and you could talk to the left fielders that were close by.

I too am of the vintage Tiger fan base. First game 1946 Greenburg hit one in the seats. Do you remember Jerry Witte? His first HR off Fred Hutchinson for the Browns that day was a thrill as Witte was my idol. Now here is a bit of trivia for anyone interested in Tiger history. Name the hall of famers that did telecast or radio broadcasts for Detroit. 5 total.

I lived in Toledo in the Mud Hen era and attended many games in '46 watching returning service vets such as Jerry Witte , Babe Martin catching and playing left field on occasion, and Dick Kimble the "no hit, no field wonder" (he was better than that probably), also Marty Pavlich who it seemed was never good for more than three innings when the hitters caught up with him etc, etc. I enjoyed the days when the upper deck was opened at Swayne Field, corner of Detroit and Monroe St. as I remember. I remember a game when Martin was in left field and threw out a runner trying to score after the catch with a throw on a low line direct to the catcher (no skip) and I was in awe! And oh, those terrible St Louis Browns farm team years which included a season where Pete Gray, the one armed player, played in the outfield for much of one season ('44 I think).
Tigers came to town in 1950 as the host Major League team. By '52 the franchise had skipped out of town to Charleston WV with Danny Menendez as the WV operator. In 1953 the Boston moved to Milwaukee and the Braves moved their AAA from there to Toledo as the Toledo Sox. The fans responded that year with a then unheard of attendance of 343,000. The private owner of Swayne Field had elected to tear down the very old park and build a shopping center on the site and in '55 the franchise skipped out to Wichita and baseball in Toledo was missing until Detroit returned to a ball field carved out at the Lucas County Fairgrounds in '66 with Jack Tighe as manager and where it was continuously till they built the new Stadium down town. Toledo ('65) and Columbus ('77) are County "owned" franchises.
Hutch was one hard working tough pitcher in his Tigers years but never was known for a sparkling ERA. Virgil Trucks, Hal Newhouser, Dizzy Trout were among the starters in that '50 season.
Hall of Famers...I will not cheat and look it up. Obvious ones Harry Heilmann, George Kell, and guessing Gehringer and I am out of names Fill us in with the missing ones if you will

I woulda loved to be around for some of the legendary Tiger teams and watch some of the legendary Tigers play. Unfortunately the only 2 true positive memories I have are clinching the division last year and getting to the World Series in 2006. I wasn't born until a few days after they were knocked out of the playoffs in 1987. Not real sure how a kid my age somehow becomes a diehard fan of a team that was as terrible as the Tigers were in the 90s, but I wouldn't trade a day of all the losing. It's just made the winning the last few years that much sweeter.
But considering my earliest baseball memory was the 1992 World Series and I never started following close that I remember until the 94 strike, it wasn't easy going basically my entire grade school life rooting for a losing team.

Your loyalty is now being rewarded. Tigers have a truly professional front office that is paying dividends. For your interest see this article on the current owner, Mike Ilitch.

Kell,Heilman are 2. The other 3 ; Harwell, Kaline and Mel Ott. 3 of baseball fans from Fulton county attended the last game at Swayne field. Danny Murtaugh managed Charlston and Luke Easter was his 1st baseman. The 3 of us pretty well fortified with suds razed big Luke late in the game. Well, he hit an 11th inning homer. We were in the box seats close to the visitors dugout and he yelled to us to meet him under the stands for one last brew at our ballpark. We did and it was a blast. A big teddybear. I missed the Glass Sox championship ( in Korea). All that suffering from the early 40s and no fun when they won it all. My Mom sent me Blade articles on the Sox. Ballpark in Maumee not very baseball-like. My opinion. Swayne Field was all about the game. So many great memorys. Nice talkin to you Charlie.
