Tri-Village vs. Hiland DIV State Semi-final -
03-12-2012, 07:26 PM
I know very little about TV. I heard yesterday that they have a 5'11 post that is a beast - averaging 26 or something with 3 other kids around 9ppg. Hiland's strength is defense, depth, and balanced scoring.
I took a look at the Massey ratings for each team. Tri-Village listed with Hiland's in parentheses:
Rank in D4: 3 (6)
Schedule: 59 (2)
Offense: 1 (11)
Defense: 39 (5)
Power: 4 (3)
Looks like a great match up.

I think it'll be a tough task for the hawks.

The 5'11" post player you are referring to is Kayla Linkous and she has scored over 2,000 points and hauled in over 1,000 rebounds in her career. One of only 3 girls to do so in the state of ohio.

She's awesome, no doubt. It'll be interesting to see how Coach Schlabach deals with her.

What are the strenghts of Hiland? Is it defense, I noticed the last game the other team only scored 9 points. How does a team in the regional finals only score 9 points. Was the defense exceptional and they had a poor night shooting?

I'm sure he will have Plan A....Plan B... and Plan C prepared. Maybe even Plan D!

Hiland's strength is that they have played DI opponents Wooster, Cinc Winthrow, North Canton Hoover, and Wadsworth, as well as DII Akron St Vincent St Mary and West Holmes. They also played good Garaway and Strasburg teams in conference. They dispatched Zanesville Bishop Rosecrans, Shadyside, and Lowellville in the tourny. There aren't any pink elephants out there they haven't seen. They aren't scared of anyone. They are 9 deep. They are balanced offensively. They are playing their best ball the last 3 weeks. They have the best coach in the state (biased opinion). They play in your grill man to man for 32 min or more if necessary.
That being said - they have some weaknesses which I will keep to myself.
The 9 points was the combination of a tremendous defensive effort and an opponent who did not handle the ball well. Windham advanced through a weak sectional and district and then played a pretty bad Akron Our Lady of Elms team. D4 basketball is not too good in the upper part of NE Ohio.

Thanks that sort of what I would have thought. It looks to me like you have alot of length as well...so for a team who doesn't handle the ball well i'm sure it was even more difficult to throw over the top.
It sounds like it will be an interesting match-up then.

Not super tall or rangy. Two guards 5'10"ish and a 6 foot post. The rest of them look like what you expect a D4 team to look like.
Another thing about this team is that the 4 seniors are making their 3rd trip to the state tournament. That helps.

This is probably from a pure talent standpoint the weakest of kthe Hawks recent State teams. Which means they'll probably win it all lol

Well, I wasn't going to put that out there, but since you did, yeah, that's true. But those teams were ridiculously talented. Mckenzie Miller was part of those teams, and she's on this one. I think Regina Hochstetler and Emily Yoder are going to have great careers. They are more a group that has to fill their roles and make the whole more than the parts.
There is some advantage in that. It's not like you can say, "If we stop her, we stop them." A kid like Jen Schrock can hit 8 3's. I was there when she did it! But it's fine with me if we have scoring like 13, 9, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2. Only Ridgewood and Wadsworth scored more than 50 on them in regulation. No D4 team has. In the tournament they gave up 35 to Rosecrans in 2OT, 27 to River, 32 to Shadyside, and 37 to Lowellville. If we can get to 50, I like our chances against most people.

I was planning on coming to watch, but it sounds like there is no competition for HILAND. I will let Arlingtons girls know not to waste the fuel.

I watched Kenton Ridge beat Tri-Village in a scrimmage last year. Granted, KR is D2 and very good, and it was just a scrimmage, but if Berlin just doubles Linkous, one in front and one behind, and makes other kids shoot, they will beat them. If BH tries to guard her with one kid, she will eat them up. She is also a great rebounder, so both kids better box her out!

If I'm being completely honest I don't think were that good. I did say this is the worst Hawks team I've ever seen before the tournament started
