Thumbs up Scorebook reports by coaches - 12-03-2011, 07:35 PM

This is a very simple and very IMPORTANT message to all Girls basketball coaches across the state.

To call in your home game, scorebook reports, the scoring summary for both teams, to your local newspapers and media outlets.

Especially important when you play at a NEUTRAL site, which is any tourney site, or classic site, hosted by another school, in state or out of state, through - out the season.. The tourney site does not do this, you as the visiting OR home team HAVE TO DO this.

It is important for all of us fans, parents, family, etc. that this be done.

Already 2nd weekend into the season, and a lot of game scores, and game boxes have not been reported to the media outlets and newspapers. Dont let this continue. It only takes 10 minutes to do it. It has to be done the day/night that the game is played. You only have that one time to do it.

So coaches, please take care of this small but very important and timely task for all of us.

Just a big fan of girls and boys basketball.

And don't wait until you get home. It only takes a few minutes and the sooner you call the better chance it has of making it in. Some papers have early deadlines - especially on Saturday nights for Sunday editions. And the game that gets called in 90 minutes ahead of deadline is going to tend to get better positioning and a better writeup than the game that is called in 9 minutes before deadline.

Well spoken, Joseph, and the home scorekeeper should also make sure the point totals for individual players on the visiting team match what is shown in the visiting scorebook...I've seen many examples where players were not given proper credit for their totals in the game.

Or these outlets could actually get out and cover a few more games. Some teams call in games to papers that NEVER take the time to cover their games....one or two a year would help coaches.

In a perfect world, all the games would be covered. But while a coach can't control which games a media outlet decides to cover, they can control if the scores are being reported.

This is also probably true of a bunch of other papers, as they lose circulation in this online world, but I personally know that The Columbus Dispatch has had to let so many staff members go in the past few years, they are fortunate to have enough people to cover 1 or 2 boys and/or girls games in a latge market on a given night, and still have enough to cover the phones for game scores/reports. As Joseph says, it's not a perfect world, and they HAVE to rely on the information that is called in.

I completely understand that there are not enough people to cover every game, every night. My only point was that certain newspapers should try to cover at least one game per year from each team in their area. I think that would be possible.

A local paper in my area has covered 1 game from my school in the past 3 years...and that was only because it was a sectional final matchup.
