Default Sophmore Starters - 08-23-2011, 12:59 PM

I have heard and seen that Tipp City may start as many as 7 sophmores on Friday night. Is thier another D2 team with as many Sophmores stepping out under the lights? Can Tipp make it 7 straight years in the playoff's with this kind of youth? Friday night vs. Graham is the first step! Starters include main running back and the QB...

Rule of thumb.....you will lose one game for each sophomore that you start. I've followed this formula for years, and it is (surprisingly) accurate, in most cases. Best of luck!!

Perhaps he meant you will lose one game for each freshman you start? Or for each sophomore you start? If it is for each starter you start that would be 11 losses for the offense alone....

It looked like the Hamilton Township Rangers will start a couple Sophs and a Freshman this year . All have looked pretty good .

I'm amazed that the freshmen even get a legitiment look to be honest, I can't remember the last time Amanda had a freshmen start, probably in the 70's.

Although, Amanda's motto is you pay your dues first before stepping out under the lights, you would have to be a freak of nature at Amanda to start as a freshmen.

Just the way it rolls there.

If you start freshmen, you have really weak seniors. That's not a good thing. There's a huge difference in a 13-14 year old and a possible 18 year old.

with boys there is a big difference in those 4 years physically for sure

for many skill positions I can def see it and the smaller the school the more likley

though creekside? (-: if the kids at your school are 13-14 in 9th grade and 18 as seniors... is that a 5 or 6 year high school years school? lol

typically freshman are 14 starting the year and turn 15
sophs turn 16
juniors turn 17
seniors typicall start the year 17 and turn 18 at some point that year

so it's 14 to 17 typically age difference which is huge many time with boys

Not to speak for creakside, but I think what he's saying is there is a possibility that a freshmen could be a young 14, say they started early etc. and then parlay that to a senior who was held back once or started school late, and there you have it.

Dilley did not start or as far as I know, didn't even play on Friday nights as a freshmen. In Ron Hintons eyes he was just simply another snotty nosed freshy. LOL

Ron would also do his best to NOT start sophomores, for the reasons above. What does he know though?lol

bigdawg I realize what he was saying... I was pointing out the exaggeration

if you have a freshman who's simply better than the other players at his spot... let alont a sophomore... you don't play him?

Cliche's aside start the best... as everyone would love to start 22 seniors every year I'm sure...

I'm fine with saying it's not common (obviously)... but when it happens why on earth would you not play your best players?

the question was about starting sophomores... Dilley rushed for almost 1000 yards as a sophomore so it's just odd to use that program and player as an example of anything other than to affirm that it's a good idea...
so yea... AC and more specifically hinton is a great example of why you DO start good sophomores and can win with them (like you said... what does he know? but don't mis-represent what he DOES! and he does start sophomers reguarly)

The smaller the school the more likely you will have younger starters. Show me a frosh or soph who starts at Davidson or Pickerington and I will show you a stud

buckeyedan, I'm not saying I agree with never starting a freshmen, believe me, I am certain that a few have come through Amanda that probably were better than the upper classmen, all I was saying is that's how it's been at Amanda since Hinton arrived. I think in the 70's before Hinton, a freshmen or 2 did start.

Now with that said and with the program that coach Hinton built over the years, especially from the lates 80's through the early 2000's, we had almost every athlete in the school going out for football, so I doubt that there were any freshmen better than the upper classmen.

Coach Hinton, always seem to have atleast a few of sophomores starting or getting significant playing time, so he wasn't afraid to play a sophomore.

Recent examples:

Davidson: Annis, Heitzman

PC: Boren, Basaglya (sp?)

All qualify as studs.
