Default Transfers - 03-26-2011, 01:24 PM

Found this on another forum. Reported by Eric Haubert of TOLEDOontheMOVE.com

In a move that will impact two leagues and two sports, Springfield junior Leroy Alexander has transferred to Whitmer High School. The 2-sport star began attending classes earlier this week. Alexander was All-Ohio Honorable Mention and scored his 1,000th point in basketball this year. He is listed as 'one-to-watch for in 2012' in football according to Scout.com.

Like most years there will be plenty of transfers and even more rumors. We probably won't know the full extent of all of the transfers until middle of the summer or later...

May sound stupid, but is a player able to go from Scott to Rogers within Toledo City Schools without moving. I thought if he just switched schools without moving he would have to sit out 1 year.

I think we will see more this year due to the downfall of TPS.

I really think it's about to get out control and the state may have to step in because Scrutchins isn't goin to do anything about it.

Seems to be out of control within the large urban districts. OHSAA needs to do something to level the playing field. Not that easy for kids in suburban areas to change schools/teams.

That will be good news for Rogers. Is he and Tony Kynard related?

Sure it is. It's called open enrollment.

OHSAA won't do anything because of possible lawsuit and I would imagine Jesse Jackson getting involved.

Open enrollment does not allow a suburban athlete to transfer to another school district to play sports. How can this happen; e.g Alexander to Whitmer? Not sure I see any other way but for the family to move. Somebody take a shot at explaining this to me.

I hate to see the high school game become more like the college and pro game. There's absolutely nothing that anyone can do about these wholesale transfers and the like? Everyone wants to go where the attention is greater and the supposed chances of getting a magical Division 1 offer are better. The problem is that not everyone is as good as they or their parents believe.

If I had a son who wanted to just leave his original school because the grass looked greener somewhere else, we would have to have a conversation about abandoning his teammates, about the importance of loyalty, and about the academic ramifications of his decision. there are other issues as well, but this would be a starting point for me. I realize that this point of view is considered neanderthal by some, but I simply don't like the idea of just quitting one school and going to another. Every time an athlete quits to go somewhere else, it becomes that much easier to quit again. Does anyone know of any local players who have been on more than two Toledo area teams in their high school careers?

There is a significant difference in making a high school decision prior to 9th grade versus changing high schools after your sophomore or junior years. Maybe that's what you are referring to? The rural and suburban schools are typically at a distinct disadvantage based on what I've seen in Toledo, Columbus and Cincinnati (maybe other places too). There were a fair number of tranfers this year (not counting the Libbey situation). The recent Alexander to Whitmer development is interesting. How does that happen without the family moving? Maybe they are.
-- By the way, I think there was at least one city league player this year at his third high school and he was in the state final four.

The OHSAA should vigorously enforce the "transfer rules and bylaws" or repeal them. They must also require they apply equally to all public and private schools. Today, they apparently do not.

The rules are the same for both. There is/was only one difference and the advantage was to public schools. A student could transfer one time from a private school back to his home public school without sitting out. They may have changed this rule by now but it was a rule.

You're absolutely right about that transfer.Does anyone have any idea how he ended up at Whitmer in the first place?I really think kids switching schools every year was part of the reason Ben Williams just stepped aside and said forget it.TCL basketball is like the wild west with no law enforcement at all. It's also part of the reason the product is so watered down.
