Default District Lines for States - 06-07-2010, 03:12 PM

I'm working on a project that deals with redrawing the District lines for another high school sport. I heard that wrestling does a great job with this so that's why I'm starting my research with wrestling. Each dot on the map represents the 310 different schools that participated in the State wrestling meet, along with its division and district.

Does this map look about right to you?

Thanks in advance.

Looks good to me. I'm curious if you could break your map down to state placers

Yes, I might be able to do that. Are you thinking state champ and runner-up?

OK. Let me see what I can come up with. You, wrestlers, really have your act together. I'm trying to get some changes made in tennis and I'm using wrestling as the model. Unfortunately, tennis is light-years behind you. OHSAA Tennis hasn't even grasped the concept of fair (or random) draws yet for States and you have progressed all of the way to seeded draws for States. It would take us another 50 years to get to that point!

Tennis and wrestling are extremely similar from an athlete vs. athlete perspective so we could borrow a great deal from you.

Here's my tennis site for central Ohio. It may interest you (or it may not).

Here is the map for the Champs and Runner-ups. Each marker represents the school. If you click on the marker, the wrestler from that school will be provided. Note that if a school has champs/runner-ups in multiple weight classes (i.e. St. Paris), still, only one wrestler is listed.

MAP

How does wrestling decide where the District lines are drawn? Does your wrestling organization decide this or does the OHSAA?

Thanks - glad you like it. May I give one of you a call or interact with you on email? I need information on how wrestling draws its District lines. I was told that the lines had to include entire counties (not true). I was told that they had to be the same for all divisions (not true). I was told that it was very important to minimize travel for the teams (not true).

I'm trying to lay out a proposal for tennis as soon as I can using the great ideas that you have developed for wrestling.

Also, does anyone know how many schools have wrestling as a high school program?

Thanks!

DI 169
DII 170
DIII 172

and those will be recalculated in 2011

Ok - I'll be the first to say it. What stands out to me when looking at the 2 maps is the lack of state champs/runner-ups from the immediate Cincinnati area. There are probably other things that stand out in this graphical representation, but to me that's the big one.

I'm curious to see if there can be a discussion of other things that stand out without getting emotional.

I would say the S/E was weak in 2010.
Just 2 South of 70 and East of 23.

SE is also quite weak in tennis. For tennis, it is more of a function of the number of indoor courts necessary for year-round training. The SE just doesn't have many.

Could I interact with any of you here or in private messages on how the lines are drawn? This is the piece of the puzzle that I need for tennis. More specifically, I need to know why some schools in Cuyahoga County go west to the Northwest district and why others stay in the Northeast. The same applies to the schools in the Dayton area (Southwest or Central).

Supercool stuff!

I am also surprised that the Cincinnati area (within 275) doesn't show more success (at least for that one year). And 4 of the 5 listings remotely close to Cin. are D3.

S/E weakness is not so surprising ... population is much lower in that part of the state. No major cities / burbs.

Unfortunately I'm also not surprised that Central OH has so few top 2's. Hoping that will get better some day ...
