i NEVER think that keeping records or anything else private is an indication of guilt. the GOP cites that all the time when demanding that we give up civil liberties on critical issues such as search and seizure as well as probable cause. you know, 'why should we worry about probable cause if we have nothing to hide?' or 'why should we worry about random frisks for guns in public in nyc if we have nothing to hide.'

both parties tend to want folks to give up civil liberties... democrats do the same thing telling us what we can eat or drink or how big our slurpy can be...

rights always have two sides... the right to be protected from search and seizure vs the right to have not have cimminals free on the street or the right of the person to eat/drink/smoke what the want vs the right of everyone else to not have to pay for their health problems

there are rights on both sides so in these types of questions you have to look past the simple rhetoric of "they are taking my civil liberties"!

you are correct
folks were claiming Obama violated the law (ineligible to be president)
or his records were false
nobody is saying Romney is doing anything illegal - just that he's taking advantage of tax breaks to prove a point about high income tax rates

so yes... they are different - there are somewhat legitimate reasons to see Obama's records and no real reason to see Romneys

couldn't care less about any of the records BTW - but it's illogical to call birthers nuts but tax return...ers... legit (illogical or hypocritical - no other option)
