that lesson? things aren't always as they seem. be flexible and fair. and did i treat them in the manner i would expect my superiors to treat me?

i'd like to think most fifty year old managers would have done what i did, but i do recognize it was pretty enlightened for 21 year old manager. also my fifty year old supervisor at the time told me to do the opposite.

btw. my current boss cut me a massive break this year. guess what? i deserved it.

thanks boss.

the government and the university endowment paid every single penny of my college education.

so, your answer? even though i got that aid through merit testing and through federal competitive grants that answer is an emphatic YES. i was hired for this job in 1980. no one anywhere was hiring and the process was obscenely competitive... for a fast food manager's job. my pedigree made the difference in the hiring process. it turns out i was hired to fix this particular store all along. the vice president of the franchisee lived across the street from my store and it embarrassed him. his wife was actually our unit's mystery shopper. i figured that out right away. i got her picture off of our surveillance tapes and made everyone on the crew memorize her face.

i earned it. i then spent it.

However:

1--i had a ton of help and didn't do it on my own;
2--i id'd two very talented young (17 yo) ladies who took over and got under control my night shift;
3--the manager of the store in xenia lent me his assistant manage one evening every other week so i could have a day off;
4--the manager of the linden avenue store took his night closer--who he could not stand because he talked so much--and sold him to me for a 50 lb. bag of potatoes and a pitcher of beer.--i helped the closer with his studies and lance ended up at the highly competitive and elite oberlin college largely on my stellar endosement;
5--my supervisor let me do what i did even though he told me upfront it wouldn't work;
6--he was wrong and instead of being like you guys he admitted it and paid my bonus gladly;
7--the government paid for a good chunk of my education;
8--my university's endowment paid for the rest;
9--i hired crew extensively using tax credits available through block grants created by the federal government;
10--when we were really a bad store the only people who didn't bail out were the municipal workers of centerville and bellbrook who actually got behind my efforts and even suggested a couple of good hires. they all would eat everyday in my store and i love them for it. i rewarded them with fee coffee refills, by making it an award winning unit, and then getting it replaced with a brand new store where they could hide from their supervisors and drink their free coffee in luxury.

# 7 --- NO, the government did not. Just the 50% of us who pay taxes paid for your education. You can thank us anytime, just as soon as you complete the little math project I assigned to you about 2 weeks that you are now late in turning in.

actually, no.

the fed paid for perhaps 10% of my education. i didn't need or apply for a pell grant. you want to talk about merit? i won most of that support in a national test... the PSAT. i scored in the upper half of the top 1% nationwide. colleges FOUGHT over paying my way...

you are talking to a national merit scholar, bucko.

1. i earned it;
2. if you were going to college then you took the same test and had something less than my results as did virtually everyone else in america;
3. don't be bitter.

am i a god? no.

but i am better than thou.
