Post Open-enrollment question - 06-21-2012, 11:01 AM

Every so often a student/athlete transfer or open enrollment question pops up on here. Since we are in the summer it might be a good time to review. Here is my question:

An Ohio student in "A" district open enrolls prior to her freshmen year in "B", an adjacent school district. She attends school there through the end of her sophomore year and plays sports.

Her parents do not apply for open enrollment in "B" prior to her junior season and she returns to "A" district. Can she play sports immediately?

We'll get to the contingencies depending on the answer. I believe she can play.

The quick answer, she should be able to play if her parents have continued to live in "A" district. But restoring eligibility is an approval process so anything can happen with the OHSAA.

ok; makes sense. Are we talking local board approval here?

And, yes parents never moved.

Bevo - You are correct. You are permitted a one-time only transfer back to your home district. Bylaw 4-7-2 Exception 6.

The OHSAA has to approve it. It is techically a waiver to the rule that any student transferring after starting 9th grade has to sit a year.

Is that a "rubber stamp" basically or a process; i.e., do I need a reason?

Yes, she would be eligible but there is paperwork to complete. Although approval is a really routine in a case like this.

Like the personal above said, 4-7-2, exception 6.
