Default At Caterpillar, Pressing Labor for Concessions - 07-23-2012, 10:19 AM

A science teacher I know, with a masters degree and 30+ years of experience was making about the same amount per year as the Caterpillar long timers. Which job should be paying more?

Very interesting situation. In this case I don't agree with the initial offer by the Company. I only with the request for higher contributions for health insurance. To me that has always been a side benfit (perk). I also do not agree with going on strike because at the end the worker is ends losing. They should be working and start looking for a new job that will give them what they need. Six year freeze is a long one...but at the same time it beats not having a job at all!

In general, anyone with a masters degree should earn more than a production worker. Generally, a teacher with a masters contributes a lot more to the country than a production worker.
Having said that, I am a believer that extreme hard times are ahead. Unions all across the country will be striking due to austerity measures that are imminent. Costs will go up, causing more outsourcing and unemployment. That is the bed we have made for ourselves.

Unfortunately, Nap, I agree that hard times are ahead. I don't see how we can continue in this mindset without a significant and long hard time. I always chuckle at the people that support the public unions yet vote down levies. Yes I think we're dangerously close to Greece. If The Obama wins re-election, I thin we'll see more of it.

Free markets should decide what the jobs pay.

If obama had his way, he and federal bureaucrats would decide.

I love riddles!...I'm just not very good at them.

What's the answer? :D

A+ old buddy! In our present situation, there is no right or wrong answer. Most would probably say the teacher, but in reality, the worst teacher and best teacher, with identical credentials, make exactly the same. So too for the Caterpillar workers.

Move to the front of the class! :D

we don't have free markets. we never did have them.

i am the only poster here who really wants free markets. the rest of you want markets that are ripe for exploitation.

that isn't free enterprise by any stretch of the imagination.

Just too timid to raise the possibility yer teacher buddy was a dud. lol

But, yes. Neither profession is working on merit based pay.

Wrong again. Doc was pointing out the exploitation of the employer. Scale pay verses merit pay? Get it?
