Reynoldsburg Shootout -
06-24-2012, 05:38 PM
3Dog,
Any news on how the shootout went this weekend in Raider Country? Heard there were going to be some very good teams, talent, and matchups. What's the story-as I'm assuming you have the scoop

Teams that participated:
Reynoldsburg
Mason
Twinsburg
Teays Valley
Gahanna
Zanesville
Toledo Notre Dame Academy
Newark
Northland
Wadswoth
Hathaway Brown
Africentric
Notable players who did not participate for various reasons: Destini Cooper (Reynoldsburg), Alexis Peterson (Northland), Ashley Morrissette (Twinsburg), Paige Cashin (Newark)
Teams that stood out to me: Reynoldsburg, Hathaway Brown, Mason and Wadsworth
Thought Gahanna struggled in the games I watched, which is surprising considering they have everyone back. They may have been missing a player or two though. Coach Hauser managed to get himself tossed in a game by a ref. Never seen that before in a scrimmage.
Thoughts and prayers to the fresman guard from Zanesville who went down with what appeared to be a serious knee injury.
I'm sure 3dog has some deeper insight.

Teams participating included R-burg, Twinsburg, Hathaway Brown, Africentric, Toledo Notre Dame Academy, Northland, Wadsworth, Mason, Gahanna, Newark, and Zanesville from those originally scheduled. Lima Bath had to drop out, so their scheduled games on Saturday were played by a team composed mostly of Reynoldsburg JV players, with one or two varsity players giving them a rest or two each game, and Bath's Sunday schedule was filled in by Teays Valley. Most of the teams were also missing one or two key players, which is often the case in the summer. The whole event went well, with the exception of a Zanesville player suffering a knee injury near the end of their final game. She was transported by squad, and our thoughts are with her for a speedy recovery. As for results, Reynoldsburg varsity and perhaps Hathaway Brown-I'm not sure) were the only teams to finish undefeated. Opponents were drawn at random several weeks ago, and Reynoldsburg's wins were against Gahanna, Zanesville, Africentric, Teays Valley, Twinsburg, and Mason. If anyone has questions about how specific teams looked, I'd be glad to respond from the games I saw them play.

Africentric should be good once again. Looked solid. Tough to tell with Northland since no Peterson or Weatherspoon. They held their own and will still be the team to beat in the City. Newark was missing Cashin but I thought they still played very well considering her absence. They brought all sophomores and one junior. They have a sophpomore guard and post who could be special.

I agree with the comments made. The girls Newark had there also included a freshman and an 8th grader. Coach Shumate must be smiling when thinking about the future. Toledo Notre Dame lost their top 3 scorers from last year, and super soph Tierra Floyd has still not returned from back problems that caused her to miss most of her freshman year. All of that showed as they had problems putting numbers on the board. After Reynoldsburg's win over Africentric, Coach Purtell told Coach McKinney not to worry about it...no one in D3 will touch them. I'd say look for them and Hathaway Brown to repeat in D3 and D2. I know of many teams who start 2 solid post players, but HB starts 3, and that has to be intimidating to other D2 opponents!

Wadsworth was also undefeated with wins over Twinsburg, Reynoldsburg JV (they should of switched Reynoldsburg Varsity and JV, Varsity beat Zanesville by 30 or more, would of liked to see Wadsworth play Reynoldsburg) and Mason. On Sunday they won over Northland (by 30), Gahanna Lincoln (coach was kicked, at least 3 technicals), and Newark.

wadschick....Thanks. I knew they looked fundamentally sound (typical Grizzlies) in the games I saw them play but didn't realize they had gone undefeated. Great job. As for switching the schedule... Having gone through all the difficulties of putting it together, I can personally tell you that doing anything other than plugging R-burg JV (Saturday) and Teays Valley Sunday) into the sdhedule that Lima Bath was supposed to play would have been a nightmare. In the essence of fairness to all and with players missing, it was imposible to tell several weeks ago who would be bringing a good team. So schedules were drawn at random. While Lima Bath was still entered, the draw would have each central Ohio team having 3 games against other central Ohio teams, and 3 games against out-of-the area teams. Wadsworth's original draw included Gahanna, Northland, and Zanesville from Central Ohio, and Twinsburg, Mason, and Lima Bath from elsewhere. We tried to get other out-of-area teams as a last minute replacement, but could find no one available. Teays Valley was available for Sunday only, so we had to revert to having our own youger kids fill in those games on Saturday. By the way, a couple of the central Ohio teams you played will be much better during the regular season. Gahanna broke Pickerington North's 21-year district championship run this year, and has all five starters returning. One wasn't there this weekend and they substituted freely for the other kids, one of whom has committed to Xavier and another to Ohio U. Northland beat Gahanna in the regional semi before losing to Reynoldsburg in the regional final. They played this weekend without their coach, a first team all-state guard who was at Virginia Tech on a recruiting visit, plus their post player, whose brother plays at OSU. So you can see, when the schedule was drawn, Wadsworth's opponents weren't going to be that weak. It just turned out that way

Mason and Newark gave us great games. We also had 2 players missing, I think that is a given in these summer shootouts. Great overall shootout, we definitely got better this weekend.

Thanks. We were really happy with the comments from teams, and think that is what summer is all about...to get better. By the way, as far as playing, we have suddenly found ourselves with an opening for a home game this coming season...If you guys have any open dates and would be interested in coming back down, we'd love to have you. Just have Coach Booth get in touch with Coach Purtell. We are specifically looking for a home game this year due to the time spent on the road, with only 7 of 20 games at home last year, and 9 of the 21 currently scheduled for this coming year. Thanks again, and glad you enjoyed the visit to our Castle in the Country.

Agreed. We send our best wishes and hope the road is not long!! Knowing her coach and the spirit of young athletes, I'm sure she will be a fighter.
