I would have to say Greg Jones of Rayen was the best.Playing against him at the time his quickness and jump shot was what seperated him from everybody else.Joe James got the hype but Jones was the one who made that team go.Anthony haynes from North was also very good.Eric Posey was a big time scorer but easy to get in foul trouble on the block.
A great shooter a few years earlier was Ivan Jackson from South. He'd use the window every time from the wing. Also a player who had an excellent senior year was Dave Crawford from Wilson. Super quick and later played at Malone College.

Well, this thread had a rather abrupt halt...after I researched and wrote about Liberty's Bob Fleischer, which got buried at the end of page 2.

I don't recall seeing the name of Ursuline's Tim Joyce ('74), who was a 6' 5" sharpshooting wing player. He originally went to Tennesee, then transferred back home, so to speak, to Ohio University. I recall him having two or three pretty impressive seasons there against some talented MAC teams of that era.

Greg Dunn ('71) and Jay Powell ('72) were Boardman High teammates who also both went to Davidson, after spearheading some strong and talented Spartan teams in '70, '71, '72.

I will also say that the two Boardman guys, Greg Dunn and Jay Powell were great players. You also have to add in Greg Jones from Rayen who had a great career at West Virginia, along with Tim Joyce of Ursuline. Nick Cochran had a fantastic high school hoops career at Girard, still remember the night he scored 50 against Campbell. Don't forget Ben Russell who played with Tillman at Campbell as a guard, while there will always be the "Rayen Invitational" otherwise known as the AA Sectional/District in Salem. The Tigers won 39 straight games there before losing in the last AA District Final before the change to four divisions when Morrow of Mooney went coast to coast to beat them at the horn. Frank Cegledy had a great run at Rayen with a bunch of great athletes. We also have not mentioned Andy and Bruce Timko from Warren JFK (who could have been at Fitch had they not moved). Both were great hoops players even though Andy was even better at shortstop (dang Cal Ripken Jr.)

Greg Dunn was a 6-5 guard and he was part of a fine backcourt with Jay Powell under former head coach Alan Burns. I believe some of the other players from those great Boardman teams were John Kerlick, Rich Harr, and Bob Hendrickson. Campbell had two great players at or about the same time as Dunn and Powell were playing in Bob Martinko and Bob Ziak. Both were excellent outside shooters.

Once a Red Devil. Always a Red Devil.

Great summary. Good call with Tim Joyce and Nick Cochran.

Its interesting to me how many people don't remember Frank Cegledy. I was at dinner a number of friends (all Mooney and Ursuline grads). I asked them to name the best coaches in Mahoning valley history. No one mentioned Cegledy. I don't think any coach in the vallye has had a run like he had at Rayen.

Joe James certainly overshadowed Greg Jones at Rayen High School, but the opposite became true in college.

James went to Michigan, did nothing, and then transferred ?

Jones went on to become one of West Virginia's all-time greats.

It was a case where James had reached his ceiling, apparently, in high school; whereas Jones kept getting better as he progressed through college.

frame,
Unfortunately many people (excluding YTown and a few others) that did not go to a public city school tend to no nothing about the city schools.

I watched them all, Mason of Rayen, Bill Dyson of East, Dave Couzart... was good as well. What I liked about Eric Posey was nights I saw him playing against Rayen or South who had 2-4 big players, he adjusted his game. I don't remember him fouling out many games. He could run the floor and was possibly one of the best pure shooters in the then Youngstown City Series. I think he led the City in scoring and was 1st or 2nd in rebounding every year. I seem to recall him headed to Eastern Michigan and the school ended up on recruiting violations and he ended up at a juco instead of sitting out I think. He ended up playing for Tom Izzo who was at Northern Michigan back then, ironically where Steve Mariuchi was as well. I remember that Eric played one of the last games against Joe James I recall reading in the paper... when Joe left Michigan, he ended up being a small forward. I always saw him as a 6'6-6'7 guard. They hurt him playing him at center... just because of height. He could shoot from 20 easy. He came home to play YSU and averaged over 20... he ended up playing in Spain. Ed Howe was also good from South, Johnny McElory was a big time player as well... and another kid Tom Glenn, from Liberty was pretty good. So many, Tim Finesy, Chaney? Anyone remember Posey playing against Dave, Mason, Seth Jaffee, A kid named Dave Anderson all 6'5 and up and still scoring 25 and grabbing 20 rebounds? Those where the old days... we'd get off from GM and race to the South High Field House. Greg Jones... the best all around player. Just watch him against UNLV... 32 points national TV.
