according to my understanding of the rules, if you actually move and change your address to an address in the new school district then she is eligible immediately. If you do not move, but instead open enroll her in the new district she would have to sit out a year.

You also have to sign a form that says you are not changing schools for athletic purposes.

But Msutt is pretty much right on the money. This open enrollment fad is going to get a lot of athletic programs in trouble if they are not dilligent in following up on new students.

Also, if only the student moves (to live with a grandparent, aunt, uncle, long lost cousin, etc.) and not the parent, it opens up a whole other stack of paperwork and documentation including change of custody, etc.

While the system is not perfect, the OHSAA is doing a much better job of investigation and enforcement than they used to.

Open enroll and she is I eligible for a year. If you move for a "non athletic" reason - whatever that is - she will be eligible immediately. Some amount of verification is done.

Does this rule apply to an incoming freshman? If the child, before entering into high school, open enrolls is it considered a transfer? Or does this only apply to those that have already entered high school? Can a 7th grader open enroll into another district and still be eligible to participate in junior high athletics?

^Be careful. If they participate in a inter scholastic scrimmage in the summer that officially begins the eligibility of a freshman students athlete.

^^^ That is true. She may not participate in any official team practice or scrimmage once the offical practice season starts and then be eligible at another school. Summer leagues and open gyms are fine but once the practice officially starts, she may not switch.
