Girard (10-1) comes to week 12 after taking down Canton Central Catholic 35-12 in round one. The offense was solid as was the D in that game and Girard spent a good bit of the second half just trying to run the clock. It was pretty much what a 1 vs 8 seed game should have been.
This week will be a tougher test. Black River (9-2), like Girard, has put up a lot of points this season, but has been shelled pretty good a couple times as well. BL has surrendered 239 points (21 a game) while scoring 436 (39) and Girard has conceded 170 points (15) while accumulating 480 (43). Girards worst defensive effort was against Campbell where they gave up 42 while BL has surrendered 55 and 48 points in two losses.
From what I could find, I think BL runs a wing-t offense ammassing about 3400 yds to date on the ground, and can throw pretty well on top of it with QB Kuntz, a junior who is 60 of 135 passing for 1,057 yards and 13 TDs.
(have to wait and see what Moose says because I'm sure he"ll "see the film on 'em!") Their defense is led by all-state D-end John Guilford (6-4-210), but they, also like Girard, have given up some points along the way.
The Pirates, 9-2, come into week 12 after knocking off Manchester for the second time this season, the first 29-28 and last night, 49-24. Their two losses come to playoff teams, Firelands who beat them 55-26 and Wellington how handed them a 48-21 defeat. Both of those teams were destroyed in their first round games, albeit by state title contenders. Firelands lost to Chagrin Falls 66-14 and Wellington lost to Kenton 74-22, as Maty Mauk broke his brothers national career high school yardage record. (See front page of JJHuddle)
For Girard, we would like to see the return of Tyler Alejars after a knee injury late in the game and Cameren Harden who suffered a nasty concussion on the opening kick off. I would guess the latter would be held out for at least one game. Hopefully the other was just a twist or bruise. But it happened fifteen feet away from me and from the instant painful reaction I'm thinking it could be ACL. Let's hope for the best for the kid because he does a nice job.
Locations for this game will likely fall in the Akron-Canton area, perhaps Lake, the site we played at in 2009 semi final, or even Canton Central Catholic. But it would nice to see it at Fitch (I can dream can't I). Do Canfield or Poland Host???
