I don't really have a problem with agencies putting out the word and trying to get folks signed up for a program... that's their job
if you don't like the program... change the program! I agree with that!
MY problem with foodstams is that you simply must have foodstamps regulated to only allow certain items to be purchased...
much like WIC dramatically increased the price of formula (if it's paid by the gov the consumer doesn't care how much they spend)... unregulated foodstamps drives up the price of food

so does re-imbursing fallow land, and we've done that for years. If you don't think the grain market is askew, look at the price of soybeans.Reimbursements should exist for human-consumed grains only otherwise the government ought to get out of the farmng picture altogether.Their involvement has merely sped up the destruction of family farms versus corporate farms. The food stamp program should be a trade-off.You do some form of community service to get them---that's the only way we'll ever end the revolving door.

Me thinks you're beginning to see the light, recognizing the distortions and negative impact of government overreach.
Carry on...

No,I'm making a point that the establishment of the USDA was to insure quality food to the masses at a reasonable price, not to make sure farming became more and more profitable to the point that it was " get bigger or get out " Free-market philosophy ", if instituted from the very beginning wouldn't have allowed it to happen but when profits are re-invested into political voice rather than operations.....the government will provide $$$ for operations.Once the corporate farms gained that leverage, they then became advocates of free-market.It's just as much a sin to talk out of both sides of your mouth as it is to talk with your mouth full.True farmers appreciate neither.

I can't believe I missed this!
The USDA made farming profitable to the point that it was get bigger or get out? Seriously?
The fact is government, in a correction, made farming UNPROFITABLE to the point it was get bigger or get out. We stopped subsidizing over production 30 years ago.
You are privy to the cheapest and largest variety of agricultural products (food) in the world...period. True farmers haven't a clue as to what you're babbling about.

We have a similar problem with beef. That's why we're paying in excess of $5 pound for hamburger, right now. Cattle farmers were paid for years to keep a limit on herds. All it took was a few dry summers to really thin the herds, then the cheap dollar made it a bargain for foreign countries to make a run on U.S. beef. Low supply and a burgeoning demand equals higher prices. I'm with you on food stamps being a trade-off program, too. I believe someone else suggested more stringent limits on what food stamps can buy. I agree. Make it base staples. But, the other provision I would make is that food stamps be available for a reasonable limited time after someone finds a job. There are a lot of people who find work, lose their food stamps and have to choose between the heating bill, medicine, or feeding their children. I don't have a problem extending those benefits to someone to let them get back on their feet.

well I don't disagree with that...
government should stay out of paying for farmers not using land... no question
I have no issue with demanding community service for foodstamps... can't see it ever happening but I wouldn't be against it
but also
Mrs Obama wants to have healthy kids and wants to force schools to serve just certain things and democrates want to ban biggy sized meals and drinks? Well take those wonderful health #s on foods and make sure food stamps can ONLY purchase items over a certain value... no more soda or junk food! Want that get a job and pay for it...
cut off increases at two children... period
do NOT pay for daycare unless the person is working...
stop punishing folks for getting jobs even lower paying ones!
there are a lot of common sense reforms that can be made... but again... one of the two major parties NEEDS people dependent on them!

At the same time the National Park Service says "Don't Feed the Animals". Why? Because the animals get used to handouts and lose the ability to fend for themselves.

I was at speedway yesterday and the girl in front of me bought several pre-packaged pastries and was able to use her EBT card. The poor thing had to pay for her own soda. She left the store and drove off in a late model Jeep. Is this really the food the gov't was hoping they would buy? Oh well, I wonder how she will pay her non-insured tax/mandate?

tax payers will pay for it
of course those same tax payers will be told THEY can't buy pastries - for our own good(though she can)

1) Travel to the land of the Inuit with a ball bat.
2) Beg them to go hunting.
3) Chase down a baby seal and beat it's brains out.
4) Light a smoke.
You will thank me later.
