Good move by him for playing time. He was not going to be much of a contributor with the Bucks. Good luck to the young man.

Becomes best dunker in MAC from day 1. Worth the price of a season ticket IMO.

Baseball--How did he use OSU? May venture to say OSU used him. Im sure they knew early on that he wouldnt be in their plans, but they dont red shirt him? And whatever meeting happened at the end of this year, should have happened at the end of last year. Now this kid has only 2 years left.

Sorry King - the kid got a free college education for 2 years, so how was he "used". Go around and ask college students at any campus if they would like to have a full ride. In return, they have to spend 20 hours a week playing basketball and the overwhelming majority would take that deal. It sure beats owing a huge amount of money when graduating.

At 6'6" tall with no ball handling or shooting skills (whatsoever), Weatherspoon was forced into either a Power forward position or Center. He is too short to play either in the B1G. I don't know if it was bad recruiting by OSU or the kid never worked at getting better but it was obvious that he would never get significant minutes at Ohio State. Maybe as you say this should have been told to him a year sooner but he did get the benefit of practicing agqainst some really good players and his body developed from a skinny kid to a man all of which will benefit him in the MAC (which is where he should have been all along) I wish him well and will follow his playing career at UT but it was in his best interest that Matta had that talk with him as he would never have played for OSU.

'Spoon was a package deal with the other Ohio Red kids, especially Sullinger. With Jared gone and no chance to break into the lineup, he no longer had a reason to stay. Might as well find somewhere he can have some fun.

BD-Agreed and well said. And he did benefit from practice with a great team, great facilities, and even a final four experience...I just wonder if thats really worth 2 years of his eligibility that he will never get back. I really just think that the staff knew before season one that he was not ready...but instead of redshirt the kid--you waste a year...then bring him back for another year, just to part ways with him. Like you said he is 6'6 with no dribbling or shooting ability and would have to play the power forward...The Coaches at Ohio State didnt see that before offering the scholarship?...During Pre Season of Season 1 (when he could have red shirted)?...After Season 1?...

TV-The importance and value of a college education is not the issue here. Because of his athleticism and potential his college tuition will be paid for regardless. The player could have gone to a host of other colleges, got that free college education, as well as been put in a position to succeed in what got him the scholarship--basketball! My point is that I believe the staff and the player had different expectations from the beginning. And this should have prompted the staff to have that discussion before the player was 2 years into his 4 years of eligibility.

Agreed, his shortcomings were obvious from day 1. An athlete who could jump and dunk and not much else.

If a player comes out of hs at 6'6" and doesn't know he has to develop "dribbling and shooting" skills, is that the fault of the coaches?

He won't have to dribble at Toledo, just look at last years turnover stats!

He originally committed to Xavier when he was in high school, then changed his mind to attend OSU. Many of us X fans didn't really see a big future for him with the Musketeers, so I was frankly surprised that Matta signed him.
He should have a nice career at Toledo, though. The coach there is building a nice program and JD will be a good addition as the program keeps improving.

^^^^ Didn't he decommit from X when Miller took the AZ job? I agree with the rest of this thread that he should have gone to the MAC.But Matta thought otherwise and he is the one that is making 3 mill or so a year to make those decisions and he hasn't missed very often.

Good luck to JD at Toledo. He will be a highlight film in that league with many honors to come.
