Central District D-III.... top teams -
01-07-2012, 07:42 AM
Centerburg, North Union and Liberty Union have the best records at this point, Africentric is always tough. So what does everyone think?

Isn't Newark Catholic D-III? They're undefeated.

Newark Catholic is back down to D-IV this year. They should be the 1 seed barring injury or meltdown.

LU's losses came to a tough Newark Catholic team and a surprisingly strong Proctorville Fairland team. I would imagine LU wins the Cardinal and does well come tourney time.

Centerburg was sitting pretty with only 2 losses (Newark Cathoic and DII Utica), until they lost last night to Pleasant. Will probably have to run the table to get a top 4 seed.

This week's dispatch coaches poll had a top 6 of Africentric, Liberty Union, North Union, Centerburg, Johnstown, and Ready in that order. Ready has a won-loss record under .500, but all the other teams in the league are D1 or D2 and having good years.

Just one of those games where the better team didn't come out and play a solid game and let the other team think they had a chance, let them hang around and they will give you some problems. Everything LH threw up went in. Oh well LU played well enough to seal the deal.

Everything gets tougher the second time around in each teams league, on the road, its high school girls, wouldnt really read too much into one score, all teams have those games.

Think the true test for LU will be tournaments. The Cardinal division down this year and is not very strong top to bottom. LU beat Millersport 90-8 and left starters in until 3:35 mins left in 4th quarter. Not very good sportsmanship from the coach.

Hoops 41,
You were either at the game and didn't pay attention or you spoke with someone at the game that didn't pat attention. LU starters did not play the entire 4th quarter and were taken out here and there in the second quarter. You are correct that the MSL Cardinal is not real strong this year but give the credit where it is do, this team is solid, look at the Dispatch central ohio leaders, two players amongst leaders in 4 of six catagories, and one in assists catagory. 4 of 5 starters averaging double figures, two averaging 15. Sounds pretty solid to me! I'm just sayin! Only lost to Newark Catholic by 6 and could have won the game. Just saying don't disrespect a good team with some very good players.

Hoops41 - You obviously read the article in Lancaster Paper which was inacurate. What actually happened at the 3:35 mark in the fourth quarter was the JV starters were removed and the JV reserves finished out the game. Most of second quarter was played with varsity reserves and JV players. There was no running up the score - if varsity players were left in it would have been in the 100s to about 5-6. Looked like Millersport either had injuries or inelligible players missing this game. MP had 9-10 freshmen listed on their roster - very young team.

You can try and explain it however you want, but 90-8 is wrong and you can't justify it. I hope other coaches see and remember this.

So Coach, what are you supposed to do not let your starters play after halftime, punish them because they have worked their butts off to be good and the other team hasn't? That makes a bunch of sense. Are you to put in your subs and jv players and tell them to shoot left handed and just pass the ball around? Give me a break! They deserve to get some playing time to and to go out and play hard. Hopefully you are not a coach who would have your team do that. If so I feel sorry for your girls! Enough said

What's wrong with telling your players to shoot left handed? You are still developing a skill and playing your normal game...When you're playing a team, you play the first half to build as big of a lead as you possibly can while working on perfecting your sets, your press, your press breaker, etc. Come the 2nd half, it's time to develop individual skill at the lower levels. What happens when one or two LU starters go down with a concussion and they can't play...that's when the fans and AD will look back and say, "90-8? You could have continued to develop your reserves in a way that they would be nearly as good as your starters..." Create patience, vision and and technical skills that one of those players normally wouldn't have the opportunity to work on in a game setting...
Another thought is tell your players that they are only allowed to score on hook shots...make it fun for them.
90 - 8 is like having a low level college team play the Liberty Union Boys team and not pulling back.

Either way you look at it...it's a rediculous score. If I were the AD, I would have told the coach to make it very difficult for his players to score...If Millersport can't provide the pressure, make some other sort of pressure yourself...

I hate to see that kind of score too. But you know if the other team shot only left handed or hook shots you know you would be on here complaining that the other team was mocking your girls and making fun of them which would be just as bad if not worse. You can sub but you can't tell players not to play. Years ago I saw an eighth grade team in this situation and the other team started playing defense with their hands behind their backs. The poor team did not take a liking to that either.
