Wanted to see the Smithies get this one. Yeah, just out-gunned athletically. But Smithville plays the game the right way.
1gcfan - They always do.
Captain - Good one. :)

Isn't Africentric a public school?

Doggone you Capt. Tony, you beat me to the punch AGAIN on this one!!! :) (you had a great line numerous months ago on same issue...you think quickern' me..... :) ). Instead of firing just at "private" schools, since Africentric is public as correctly queried by auggie, I was figuring they were now going to try to outlaw open enrollment schools...public or private. Although I don't think, technically, Africentric is even "open enrollment." I think you have to apply to get in there even though it's public.
Or maybe only allow teams in the tourney that bring at least 100 students to the game so the atmosphere is the, ahem, "right" atmosphere???
It remains to be seen.....
For now, some of us are happy to do the best we can with the kids we have, enjoy them, and try to teach them as much as we can. No time to worry about all the "unfair" stuff in life.......which, by the way, doesn't start nor does it end with high school basketball.
And Hawkeyez, always love your posts. And I was a JV coach for Perry Reese way back when he was at small Guernsey County school at the beginning of his career, my wife is from Triway, and I've played some softball at Killbuck church, so I love Hiland and that area of the state (Perry used to have to put my butt in that overhang/press box thing when I came up for games at the old gym/school.....). But......what in the world does "Smithville plays the game the RIGHT way" (emphasis added) mean????? Does that imply Africentric plays the game the "wrong" way??? What is the "wrong" way???? What is the "right" way???? I'd say winning a state semi by 20 is pretty much an example of the "right" way to play the game. I'd love to see the Smithies win a state title (went to law school with a great person from S-ville), but I hope your statement does NOT imply certain "code words" that are ridiculous and out of place. I hope it just means you're a fan of the "non-set, motion offense" like Knight teams used to use, and how impressive it is that Smithville's girls can run such a system, which IS impressive for a HS team.

It means they play defense, emphasize teamwork, and are great sportsmen and women. The Frizell family and others associated with that program are super, super folks. That's all.
Me thinks you think too much. Dang lawyers. :)
Disclaimer: Any positive thing said about one group of people does not imply any comparison or contrast to any other group of people. (Maybe I should have gone to law school, but why waste a life?) ;)

Let's see 2 years from now when 3 middle schools girls come up from Afro middle school team, what you have to say then. Plus three 9 grade girls on team now who came up through the middle school last year. Most on here have no clue of how the Columbus city school district does open enrollment I bet. Question if you as a parent had the opportunity legally to choose your school your child can attend, and your child was good in a particular sport or gifted academically , would you go to the school that best fit your child? So what is wrong with anyone doing that, certain schools don't have to recruit, parents want them or hope they can attend based on the schools rep. Afro coaches work hard during of season and during regular season. There girls are set up to play Aau ball from 5 grade on, so yes there is a system at that school and the payoff is college scholarships for most of the girls.

Thank you bbaau. I would think a smaller community would have the advantage on this level because the kids have played with each other since birth. Africentric was just better than Smithville. Better players, better athletes. Anna will bring bigger challenges for Africentric so it will be a more competitive game.

Merklaw= Thanks but there is no way I'm quicker than a lawyer!
As far as A High recruits their team every year they screwed up big time 3 years ago. A young lady named Lexi Peterson coming out of a Columbus MS wanted to go to A High. She applied and was denied. She nows plays for Northland as was just named 1st team all-state. If they are recruiting they better start doing a better job of identifiying who is going to end of being that good and not let those type of players get away.

Smithville cannot recruit like Africentric. Smithville could have the 10 best ball players in Wayne county and still not be as athletic Africentric. Fair and balanced.

I see Africentric has a player from the now-tarnished Harvest Prepatory on their roster. Going from Canal Winchester to Columbus....now that's interesting, but maybe not since the OHSAA dinged Harvest Prep. ;)
Defend Africentric all you like, but they're the Cleveland Glenville of Columbus Public Schools.

Hawk. Being a lawyer gives me the flexible schedule to be able to coach young ladies' hoops, so maybe that cancels out the wasted part of life. I will leave it this way. Coach McKinney works his team as hard as anybody. I like the way they play. They play the game right. As does Smithville.

Girl from prep wanted to participate in the tournament , since there school was banned . She came from a small size school and wanted the same when she transferred so Afro was the smallest of the city schools. Plus do most know who her dad is ? I bet not because if you did and you questioned his integrity he would set you straight. I will say he's a person.whos doing pretty good also and will be a force as long as he's there also.

Her dad was a stud at Columbus Wehrle, played at Ohio State and bounced around at a number of coaching positions before landing in Pickerington.
