Throw out some spread teams, any division, any year, that have won a state championship.

Kenton Wildcats, 2002, Division 4 won state championship. Play exclusively out of the spread. Not sure Mauk took more then a handful of snaps under center his whole HS career.

Coldwater won 2 against Mooney using the spread. But some may say that Mooney losing their two All-State QB's (Johnson/Koulianos..Iowa) and (McCarthy/ ND)....days before those games, were the main reasons for those outcomes.

But nonetheless, it appears FEW spread teams win state titles. Just look at what a healthy Ursuline team has done against Coldwater.....I think they average like 50 points a game against them (in three state title meetings).

Mentor also lost twice. Glenville too...who throws the ball too much.....lost to a triple option team in Hilliard Davidson. And HD has 2 big school titles.....multi-talented fancy pants throwing teams like Glenville....ZERO.

It's cold in December, and unless you are playing a nicked up team, without their best defensive backs, those great summer offenses, fail in the cold weather.

I may be wrong but i thought that st. eds was running the spread last year, or atleast some elements of the spread.. I could be wrong but i feel like they did.

2007 D2 Championship game Cincinnati Anderson defeated Louisville 31-25 and both teams ran a version of the Spread/West Coast Offense.

I think there's a difference between teams that run it every play, like Kenton, and teams like Ursuline, Anderson and some others that sprinkle it in here and there. There are a lot of versions of the spread, but in my book Kenton is really the only honest to goodness spread team that has done it.

Sylvania and Coldwater used elements of it a lot, but still ran a fair bit of plays with the QB under center and used the RB as more of an all-purpose player. To me, the spread is shotgun and 5 WR all the time.

Like Cards79 said above, you better have good weather and a little luck to pull it off. The fact that most, if not all, playoff games past the first round are played on turf helps as well. You don't see too many regional finals or state semi-finals played in the mud any more.

Sylvania Southview's offense in 2008 the QB was never under center. Its even rare now to see our QB under center. Even on the goal line.

I believe Anderson was the same way, as a matter of fact I think they had a penalty called against them for spiking the ball to stop the clock because the quarterback was in shotgun.

what alot of people think is the spread isn't the spread. the spread is empty with motion ability to run. coldwater was in the current pistal and ran the ball the majority o f the time. right now a team that i would consider spread is kenton and after this season they probably won't be very good because it's an individually based offense. high school football should always be about team first and not padding ones kids stats and sacrificing the entire program .imo.

I think you guys don't understand what they spread is. It is not always empty but a variation of it. As you can see the pistol is a variation of the spread. So rhino is not soright after all:D

For both of Coldwater's State Championship teams, the QB was always in shotgun except for maybe 10 plays throughout the year.

They had an offensive line (all D1 recruits) that averaged 6'5" and 305lbs....they ran a few plays out of the "spread" just for fun.

Maple Heights got there because of Stubbs and a few other exceptional athletes. A once in lifetime confluence of talent and timing. Maple will be Maple again...this year. A very good team.

"what alot of people think is the spread isn't the spread. the spread is empty with motion ability to run"

ehh. Not completely true...

A spread offense is an offense that is designed to spread the linemen and add more receivers. And you certainly do not have to throw the ball. You could be running the spread option. You also don't need to be in shotgun to be considered a spread offense either.. There are many different elements of the spread, other than the typical shotgun and throwing 90% of the time.
