no, no, no. Saw Mechanicsburg in a 7-on-7 earlier at Minster and they were outgunned by everyone there including Milton-Union who whipped em pretty good. Could be a running team but I didn't see much size over there.

Let's hope that WJ gels a little this week, and works out all the kinks. They were switching kids in and out so much tonight, it was hard to tell who was who. The Seniors need to rally everyone to keep their head in the game. GO RIDERS!

The Burg is very young and inexperienced this year. There is still too much thinking on the field and not enough reacting. We are without our best d-lineman for 3-5 games. The coach is teaching the right things, but it is not catching on with the younger players. We might stay close for a little while, then we will fade as the game goes on. This is what I see and my opinion only. I see it being 24-7 favor WJ. Good luck to both and NO injuries.

Burg was physically outmatched Fri vs Marion Local...

I believe still a solid football team, but just not the horses right now to beat the better teams. (maybe a .500 season...)

Not so much panic, but players out on injuries, late enrollees that were waiting to be cleared to play by OHSAA, and underclassmen learning what it means to play Varsity. I feel like this feeling of "panic" was in the air last year as well. A new Senior class fulfilling the role of leaders, and rallying the team is all we need. Hoping I'm proved right!:)

Anyone catch WJ on channel 4 last night at 11 on the sports?
Talked about a great winning program and 5 consecutive league titles and just reloading.
Also mentioned only the 8 seniors this season and if I can remember right would probably be coach B's lowest # since 2002 or 2003 I believe.

WJ and Burg will have 200+ years of football between the 2 teams this Friday night at kickoff.
As of WJ football goes, in the last 50 years WJ has had 4 losing seasons and in the last 5 years WJ is 55-8, 87.5 winning percentage.
That has come from buying into their coaches program, discipline, heart, hard work, class and leadership.
This season, all that can be thrown away if the same characteristics are not shown.
With only 8 sr's, the lower classman will have to step up and show what WJ football and their community is about when them brown & gold jerseys are put on.
Next season, WJ will celebrate 2 classes of state title teams, (1962 & 1982).
If these underclassmen can step up this season next season they will have a shot at the same kind of success.

Last years game was a pretty much lop sided game in favor of the Riders.
WJ- 35
MB- 7
With the Burg scoring first on their 2nd play from scrimmage on a QB keeper for 80 yards.
It seemed that Burg was on their way to a victory on Roughrider Hall of Fame night.
But, after that 80 yard TD run, the Indians only managed 45 yards the rest of the night on the ground.
Total yards.
WJ- 391
MB- 138

Burg managed 125 yards on the ground but just 13 yards through the air on 3 of 15 passing.
They had 5 1st downs during the night and were 1 of 10 on 3rd down conversions.

For WJ, they didn't have a banner night with 288 yards rushing and 103 yards passing on 5 of 15 passing.
But, it did get the job done and that means that the Indians are going to be looking for payback tonight.
Since 2006, WJ has turned the series in their favor winning 4 of 5 with the Burg winning a thriller in overtime at WJ in 2008.
Both teams this season are not picked to be the usual powerhouses of the past as WJ has had some problems with penalties and attitude in the last 2 scrimmages.
But after probably the hardest week of practice these boys have ever had at WJ, I think we see a different WJ team tonight.

After a heated scrimmage with Westfall last Friday night, coach B. has been taken some heat from fans all around asking him what is happening to the WJ program.
I believe that the players will learn from last week and a week of practice what WJ football is about!
WJ is lucky to have a coach and coaching staff like coach B. and company.
A lot of fans want it to be like the old days but I remember the old days and not going 12-1 each year.
And I can guarantee you if coach B had those WJ teams of the past this town would have more banners in the gym.
Look for a good game from the Riders tonight!

Good game WJ. It was not a pretty one to watch, mainly for all the penalties. Both teams need some work, but we need a whole lot more. I just hope our underclassmen grow up quickly. Good luck rest of your season.

West Jefferson is in some trouble. not happy with this team at all. Burg would have scored but hurt them selfs. Wj just had a very hard time stopping the run!! again!!! the offense needs some work. good job by the oline allowing no sacks tonight. but the defense is going to get them beat if they dont improve. the PAT team needs work. 1-5 on PATs 3 blocked (i think) one missed completely. positives from the game, good job getting the first win. always important. Very impressed with the WR core. and how bout the running of Fulton at RB i like it. Hatfield just needs to carry it a little tighter. all in all still some work to be done with the young roughriders. they looked more composed and showed the emotion in between the wistles. but still disspointed in how soft the Defense is. even though is was a shut out, burg didnt help themselves out. too much of the arm tackling. well see what improvment Wj can get next week vs MP. good luck to burg the rest of the way

I seen alot of people step up today, Dalton being one of them. A little rough around the edges, and the ends need to step it up. 2nd half they definately got their heads in it a little more, but we need that from the first play. First game jitters out of the way for a lot of the kids. I see great things. I say the legacy will continue. IMO Buescher made the right choice suspending a few players (even if it was only half a game for one) he made a point that was taken to heart by alot of the kids.

A tale of two half's!

The young gunz of wj was up against some young indians last night as well.
Burg started many soph's and some frosh as well, including 2 soph's on the o-line and d-line and frosh at the db spot.
Burg held their own for awhile on offense especially running the ball with a much smaller oline.
6-0 at the half was not what most expected, but after wj fumbled on their 1st drive, that seemed to take the air out of the sails early.

But at halftime once again the coaching staff of wj made outstanding adjustments especially on defense and running the ball as wj put up 18 points in the 3rd qtr.
The fg team will have to be worked on especially with the kicker that wj has in Lollo. The kid can kick the ball a mile but needs 2 seconds to be able to kick the PAT.
The o-line did a great job last night (Doran, Smith, Walton and company). Doran will become a beast at the tackle spot.
Yes, no sacks on the night.
Williams at times had all night to throw the ball when he wanted and when he threw the ball he was dead accurate.
I will try and get the stats on as quick as possible.
The wr's for wj did run good routes and have good hands, especially Fulton and Greenwalt.
For as big as Greenwalt is he has excellent hands for a big guy.
The new kid Casto got broke in pretty well last night only leaving the field on the fg team.
He even got his 1st td as a Roughrider last night, receiving though but I know he will take it anyways.
WJ will really have to step it up especially in the penalty and turnover department.
And about the ref crew last night, one of the best I have seen.
Wish they could all be like that!

Now, get ready for a week of mouth running from the green and gold about what they are going to do to the riders.

Springfield paper has Cody Williams rushing for 2 touchdowns, and Chaney Fulton throwing for 2 touchdowns. I was laughing until I seen the Madison Press and it has a picture of Fulton sacking the Burg QB and has his name as Chris Fulton. Maybe I should become a reporter?

I had in my above post that wj scored 18 in the 3rd qtr but they scored 25 in the 3rd.
The jv's even got playing time in the 1st game of the year.
