There are times when we as fans look at a schedule and say why the heck would a coach or A.D. schedule this game.

Lakewood VS Sheridan comes to mind.

So my question why do games like this get scheduled?

No disrespect intended toward any team or coach .

Sometimes the smaller schools may have a good squad that can compete w the big boys...barring injury its usually a good experience either way bc it will give players a taste of high level competition prior to league play....

Most of the time when it is done with bigger schools, it is done because of money. With smaller schools like Lakewood and Sheridan, I have no idea. I hope Lakewood competes.

They get paid mileage and some other expenses

Hmmm. Never heard of this. I wonder if ohio h.s. football guru eric Frantz has any insight?

Usually common practice, hence why contracts have buyout clauses.

They also play because of hoped for computer points. Sometimes a team will cancel a game closer to home against a big rival that brings a great crowd for the hope of winning a game and perhaps earning a play-off spot at season's end. If you lose to that excellent team by one, you had what they call a great moral victory but you may lose your shirt on a poorer gate and in this day of austerity everywhere, perhaps the "money game" would be the wiser choice. Plus, there is the injury factor if the opponent is more than just a little better than you are and if you do lose, regardless of the point spread, your computer point total for that really close, excellently played game by your local heroes is ZERO. Plus...some of the very people who yelled and screamed for a tougher schedule sometimes are among the first to be critical of the game being played if it results in an embarrassing loss or some serious injury issues for your team.

Big rukus- i cant imagine anyone at the h.s. level scheduling w a "payout" in mind...happens a lot in college but i imagine this topic is a deciding factor @ hs level

Then why does Big Red play 7 Home games every year.? And Teams are willing to go there to play knowing they won't get a return visit.
2 ways to answer the question : Pre School levy failures and the present Economic times . Schools,Coaches,Ad's scheduled these games to set a foundation for building their program . To set the bar and expectations higher to provide mental toughness and raise the overall standards of the Program.
The we will play anyone any where type of thinking. This line of thinking is what has made many of the past and present powers in the State of Ohio so successful. I don't think i need to name them just look at the OHSAA Football website.
Nowadays you can almost sense that some schools are scheduling these games for the $$$$$ and not for the right reasons. If as a Coach or AD if you schedule one of these games without the kids in your program understanding why or if you don't have the type of kids who can't mentally or physically handle this type of game then your going to get someone badly hurt or worse.

Give you an example Last year Desales had St. Ed's on their schedule normally a decent matchup for the Stallions. However a combination of St. Ed's having perhaps not only their Biggest and Best Team ever , Desales after a very nice 3 year run was down not only in Talent, but in Size and depth.
The result the Stallions suffered their worst defeat ever on the Scoreborad 62-0.
However, Because the kids in the program have been conditioned both mentally and in the weight room to play aganist these types of teams the impact on their sike and confidence was minimal at best. Some will point out yea but they lost 4 out of their last 5 games. Yes, but in doing so they also played their best Football. They took a undefeated D1 School LaSalle to the wire and would have beat them if Ball hadn't got reinjured and then Had Watterson on the ropes late into the 4th QT and almost beat the soon to be State Champs as a 8th seed in the playoffs.
So it all comes down to the Schools,Coaches and Ad's to play these money games for the right reasons at the right time. If your kids aren't buying into the expectations or worse being sacrficied for the almighty $$$$ then something bad is going to result.

The reason Lakewood plays Sheridan is because they play in almost everything because they are so close together. The kids hang out together, why beyond that I have no idea. No computer points for Sheridan and no win ever for Lakewood.

Tcscoup, understand your point but obvious teams denounce your theory (colerain the yr after they won state and then embarrassed themselves in the herbstreit game)...just curious, what kind of payday do schools get for taking on opponents?

The Big Red fans usually have a pretty good pulse on the estimated pay days that teams get for making the trip to play them. Its not unusual in a contract for certain monetary promise's being made. The cost of gas or a nice meal being provided after the game.

Rods: When did Colerain "embarrass" themselves in the Herbie? I thought they were one the Herbie All-Stars in terms of always delivering. I can't recall them being embarrassed ever. Perhaps the ol' Boss is accumulating some cobwebs in the belfry. My recollection was that UA and Trotwood were the only Ohio teams to ever get truly embarrassed in the series....

W.b....your prbly right...i could've sworn there was an ohio team a while back that won a state championship and then got thumped the next year in the herbie...and let's not get carried away w just citing 2 teams to get "embarrassed"...there have been plenty of teams that prbly could've made things ALOT worst then what final scores indicated due to calling off the dogs...as a matter of fact i'm curious to know what the record is between ohio vs out of state opponents...dont understand why the herby people cant get quality teams to represent the great buckeye state...i recall seeing one team play an ohio team that didnt even play their starters IN THE SECOND HALF. That imo would fall in the embarassed category....nice try 89

Elder won back to back titles and got beat by Louisville Trinity and Warren Central out of Indy but that was in a event in Kentucky.

I was at both games.
