The old thread on Big Red seems to have died, so I thought I would start a new one.
I am hoping to return home to see a couple of Big Red's games. I was thinking about Buffalo St. Joe's and Massillon. Everybody knows the Massillon game will be hot, but I also think this is the year that St. Joe's surprises us. With Jim Kelly's nephew as qb, they may have more offense than we have ever seen from them.

I doubt Kelly will provide "more offense than we've ever seen from them." Namaan Roosevelt was a dual threat, and he gave us the best game we ever had with them.
Oh, and he was a great kid too. Can't forget the pic of him presenting the autographed helmet to Littlestink. Classy.

Right now I'm just concerned with Morgantown and Buchtel. I think we will learn a lot about Big Red from those games. On paper, we should take both of them. But football isn't played on paper, so we will just have to wait and see what happens.

I have gone to a couple practices and say that they look really rusty.I am sure that at this point of the season all teams are rusty, but RENO @ CREW will whip them into shape and have them ready for the opener. The great coachjng staff and the TRADITION of BIG RED FOOTBALL will help prepare our young men for a good season. As always ROLL RED ROLL!!!!!!!!

Manowar... Awesome site... I have looked at the RollRedRoll site several times.. and I enjoy taking a peek each year... Good Luck to the BigRed this year... I am a local supporter and enjoy seeing Steubenville do well. They always represent the Ohio Valley well. Although there is some bickering on the websites each year, a majority of the Ohio Valley football faithful feel BigRed has a great program, tradition, and wish you all well..
Good Luck in 2011..

So I hate to bring this up but I want to make sure the rumors I am hearing are correct. The talented sophmore running back that alot of people including myself was looking forward to watching is no longer on the team? If this is true, does he possibly work his way back into good graces or is this set in stone already? Any info would be great!

He refused to work out all winter, supposedly told Reno "he's too good-he doesn't have to". They'd take him back but his extras would be hell. At this point it's probably too late for him.

You'd have to be nuts to leave a program the caliber of Big Red. What ever happened to the running that left a few years ago to go to Toronto? Brandon was his last name maybe?

Stopped by and picked up my 4 season tickets today. Wish I could say it was a positive experience, but it was not. Lynn did her usual efficient job locating my tickets, but other than that . . .
Wanted to get patron ads for my kids, but unfortunately, could not even get a hello for me or my daughters. Thought about picking up a booster membership for this year and a couple of schedules, but you couldn't even get a wave from the booster table. I am confused as to the purpose and goals of these set-ups. If you are only open and friendly to the people you recognize and know, how will you grow enough to survive?
I really don't want to hear the lecture about pitching in. I work for the railroad, and I cannot tell you if I will be home tomorrow, so planning is basically shot, and I am only guaranteed 12 hours from the time I marked off my last train. When I am home, I spend a great deal of time running a teenager between band and soccer, or any number of things for the younger ones. But I can tell you, but for a few of my fellow band parents, there isn't much welcoming going on with these programs, and I'm really thinking of checking out.
I made a decision about 3 years ago to buy a home again in this area, even though it means about a 1:10 minute drive and $2.10 in tolls every time I go to work. There were many nice communities we looked in, but we thought it would be nice to stay near family and my beloved Big Red. Right now, I'm thinking when my oldest daughter graduates next year, we will take our household and good jobs somewhere where someone gives a crap.
Sorry to vent here, but it's getting a little old.

You are going to leave Steubenville because the ticket office lady took a few extra moments to find your tickets and the booster table didn't drop everything and worship the ground you walk on?
I have to admit though, every time I see Fred Abdalla walking the Big Red sideline during the play-off's or "I have as many DUI's as Big Red has OHSAA State Title's" Mucci in the stands, I want to hurl.
redengineer
08-12-2011, 09:53 AM
Josh, you really don't pay attention. I did not complain about Lynn in the slightest. She took over for a legend, and has done fine.
Worship? A greeting was all I mentioned Josh, you're a little bit of a drama queen. My lament was with the lack of welcome to anyone they do not recognize. Answer the question Josh, "How will you grow enough to survive?" What is the average age of the booster officers? I venture to say only one is younger than I. Do they want to die off?
I deleted the post, which must have been while you were writing, because I know who I am talking about, and know they are good people, but there is a blind spot they're missing.
As for Fred "Where two or more cameras are gathered in my name, there will I be also" Abdalla, I have no comment. And Dom should resign and address his problems.

It's official yesterday, the TEAM voted him out as he did finally show up at camp, they don't take kindly to those who do not work. However, good news a Senior (fastest on the team) is back <he hasn't played since Soph year> got his act together and the boys voted him back ..he's a playmaker. Also another Senior who had left area is back and will help. These guys, however, have been working out since last winter. The soph was a no show...................

what a shame about the sophmore. Hopefully he gets his act together and comes back next year and contributes. Big Red fans...FYI...The Youngstown State football team has placed 3 of their players on the Missouri Valley Football Conference "All-LEAGUE" Squad...one of which is former Big Red player Andrew Radakovich, a Junior Offensive Tackle for the Penquins. Radakovich started all 11 games last year at left tackle. Kudo's to Radak!

Agree, O moved ball but we had several drops again in the receiving dept. D same old thing >> people pass on us, if they're good. Kinks will be ironed out though as some kids getting lots of looks aren't getting the job done, they'll be spectators soon...............Losing 1-0 to Lake though is nothing to hang their heads over >> they've beaten us 4 in a row.....this one was the closest.

I rarly attach much meaning to the score of a scrimmage, because the coaches are using these contest to see who will best fit in the various slots they have to fill.It does give the newer players a better idea of what is expected of them.Whether they do well or not they still learn from the experience this will help them later in the season or future seasons.Football is in the air I can smell it and cant wait for that first kickoff!!!!As always ROLL RED ROLL!!!!!!!!!

WE would take 10 home games if we could, so would your team. Your probably just ignorant to that fact. Do i sense a little jealousy here, maybe you should worry about your team and we will take care of ours. Oh yea, we have done well against the Northern teams in the playoffs and have generally handled the Western teams without to much problem.....Give us your team and there schedule for the last 10 yrs, playoffs included...Lets compare a little.

"Yawn." About the same time they do mandatory scheduling for everyone. You don't think Ignatius, St. Ed's, Mooney, Ursuline, DeSales and the like wouldn't like to have more home games, or games against more local schools, or even GAMES? We have plenty of teams in our conference that are close to us in size, and they have ALL quit home and home series. Not to mention that 2 of the out of state teams are actually in our conference. Did your school play Ursuline this year or last? Massillon? Heck, even East Liverpool? Ducking, yea.

I see at least 3 losses on Big Reds schedule. Struthers moved the ball in the first couple drives fine against the 1st O and one score had maybe 2 players that rotated from their first D. A trip to youngstown ursuline looks very dark for the Big Red esp after what happened last year.

I'm excited about this season. I'm not the least bit concerned about our scrimmage losses. After all, we didn't win all our scrimmage games in 2005 and 2006 when we won the state championship.
I know one thing for certain: we have a VERY talented sophomore class. If they can mature quickly, we could have a very good season. I also know we have a handful of super upperclassmen (e.g., Murray). If Reno can get a few kinks worked out, we should go deep in the playoffs.

This group of kids have a great deal of potential. The big question mark is will they realize this potential and turn it into wins. Defense looks strong against the run but secondary lacks experience at the corners and safeties learning different looks in pass coverage. O-line is a little on the small size but they look to be aggressive. If the qb comes down and can go through progressions and get a little more touch can be an explosive offense with a telnted group of running backs in place. Linebackers as usual run ndown hill and smack you in the mouth. Should be interesting season, I look for big things to come once the team gels.

just saying looking at last years schedule.. you lost to the 3 good teams you played All 3 from Ohio beat a (2-7) stinkers miechigan.. sweeked by a keesport edged a (5-5) St john's team.. who the hell's st johns college is that a boys school or reform school.. you stomped a (2-8) wheeling park.. got rolled by a so-so D1 massillon ohh you play that game away.. got 39 put on you by St Josephs. they was
(4-5).. and got beat by Dover another Ohio team in the first round of the OHSAA Playoffs..
so now. steubenville history is unmatched in eastern ohio no question even on the state level.. ummatched.. i'm just saying last year 3 ohio team beat you and you only played 3.. that's (0-3).. what if you played 8quality ohio teams. is that (2-6).. that don't make it in OHSAA playoff's..
this season my D3 team not in a league (independent) plays 4 D1 OHIO SCHOOLS. the D3 defending state Champ. D4 State Semi Finalist
and 3 other playoff teams.. don't tell us in Ohio you can't find games. the OVAC is a HALL OF FAME CONFERENCE.. our school
would love to be a league like the OVAC.. BTW .. 10 years in a row in playoffs.. state runner up.. not steubenvilles record but
no push over either....
I'd just like to see big red schedule some more Ohio teams.!!

just saying looking at last years schedule.. you lost to the 3 good teams you played All 3 from Ohio beat a (2-7) stinkers miechigan.. sweeked by a keesport edged a (5-5) St john's team.. who the hell's st johns college is that a boys school or reform school.. you stomped a (2-8) wheeling park.. got rolled by a so-so D1 massillon ohh you play that game away.. got 39 put on you by St Josephs. they was
(4-5).. and got beat by Dover another Ohio team in the first round of the OHSAA Playoffs..
so now. steubenville history is unmatched in eastern ohio no question even on the state level.. ummatched.. i'm just saying last year 3 ohio team beat you and you only played 3.. that's (0-3).. what if you played 8quality ohio teams. is that (2-6).. that don't make it in OHSAA playoff's..
this season my D3 team not in a league (independent) plays 4 D1 OHIO SCHOOLS. the D3 defending state Champ.
Cloris...you forgot to mention that Big Red beat some of the best teams "IN OHIO" during the Playoffs (When it really counts) the last 10 yrs or so...We really dont care how you feel or what you would like to see.

Why is there such an incessant, neurotic, preoccupation with Steubenville's schedule? It has been the foundation for back to back state titles, a runner's up trophy and endless playoff appearances.....yet the entire state and their aunt Mary has advice for the AD.

I agree REDRIOT. Although we are friendly rivals, your AD should never be questioned, nor Reno.
You guys do schedule just enough to get into the playoffs. That's smart. That way you can get younger kids experience, when you have those blowout wins. That also accomplishes the goal of getting thru the regular season without getting your best players injured. It's a smart strategy. Ursuline has done something similar over the last few years, putting easy wins a week ahead of their "big games". It's worked well for them too.
It's a lesson....by you guys and Ursuline.....on how to schedule to maximize post-season chances.
Well done by the Dean Martin crew down on the River.

Reno knows what he's doing. There is no way we could play a Mooney-like schedule and be healthy come week 11. The staff here do more with a small D-3 team than most anyone in the state. Forget those who would put down the schedule. It serves its purpose, year in and year out.

True. That's the reality of it. That's just one of the reasons why Steuby is a D3-D4 power. They are good. they are strong, they are tough....but more importantly....They are smart.
They leave no stone unturned and leave nothing to chance.
It's not about talent, .....it's about the "PROGRAM". From getting the lights turned on in time, to having an athletic trainer on the field for every practice.....little things...

I don't know about doing "just enough" to make the playoffs...out of Big Red's 23 playoff appearances, they have never came in lower than 3rd in the region, and coming in 1st more than half that time.

Not to get off the subject, but does anyone have any info on Morgantown? Should Big Red run away with this one like last year? No one is really talking about the game that is now less than 48 hours away. Just wondering.

Cloris. You sound like a frustrated old women. We like our river town and we like inviting others to come to our Stadium. I know your team just has that ole corn field to play on and those uniforms are gosh ugly. Also, your team really ###############, all those losing seasons and no light at the end of the tunnel for success. I can truly understand your frustrations. I pray for your jealousy and the anxiety that you go through every football season. You hang in there ole girl, take your meds every day, try not to get to excited about nothing and when your able to travel, come down and visit us, it might make you whole again......Roll Red Roll,,,,,dont you just love the sound of that Cloris.. Tonight's contest with Morgantown might prove more challenging than anyone expects. Morgantown is experienced and seasoned plus they won't be "shell shocked" by the atmosphere. If you read what is being written about them, they are improved.

One down a long season to go,but we will take them one at a time.BIG RED looked pretty good tonight,I hope that they will continue to build on what they learned tonight.Next up Buchtle. They were beaten tonight by Massillon 31 to 6.Massillon had an balanced attack on the ground and through the air, with some pretty good defence.Buchtle stayed mostly with the ground game with only 2 for 7 through the air.On another note anyone not staying for the Oak Glen Edison game missed a good one. They both looked exciting, good luck to both teams through the rest of the season. As always ROLL RED ROLL!!!!!!!

I thought we would be in for a real dog fight on Thursday after watching the video of Morgantown in their 2 scrimmages. After the game I figured Parkersburg was just a real dog, and then they turn around and beat Brooke on Friday night. What I know now is I know very little and should stop trying to guess what will happen on a Football Friday night.

Reno gets the boys ready by telling them to play to the best of their abilities,if they follow those instructions everything that is good will fall into place. They follow a lifting program to build their bodies and follow TRADITION to build their hearts. That is a combination that is hard to beat, strong bodies with the heart to win.AS always ROLL RED ROLL!!!!!!!!!!

I just heard that Buchtel had four players out due to some kind of suspension.Depending on whether they were starters or not could be a hugh impact on their performance.I did't here if they would be back this week,so Reno and crew will just have to have the young men ready for anything. As always ROLL RED ROLL!!!!!!

They had 5 transfer from over the summer, dubbed "The Firestone Five", but only one was ruled eligible to play.
Don't know if the other 4 are appealing the ruling or not.
Regardless, they would still have to go through their accumulation period to play.
