1. What does this term mean to you as a coach?
2. What did it mean during YOUR playing days?
3. What do you expect from your players when using this term?
My answers:
1. Be there if you plan on playing (excuses like 2nd sport, vacation, family, job:ok)
2. I better be there
3. You better be there unless discussed and excusable

It depends on the sport and school. We were expected to schedule work, vac etc around our workouts. At my son's school kids skip 2 a days to go to the fair and a coaches wife took his son on vacation the first week of practice then he benched my son when I made him skip a practice to catch up on his school work (I sent a note).

wow, no wonder parents freak out if there are coaches out there that do things like that

i would say you should be there unless you have a good reason, i would do this on individual basis, less rules leads for wiggle room as coach

1) Get there if you can.

If you work, you know our schedule, TRY to schedule around it. If you're in another Varsity in-season sport, you can miss. If it's out of season in the other, try your best to work with both. Vacation, same with work. Family, do your best and most family's are pretty good about scheduling things around the sport.

2) Get there.
3) Be there as much as possible to improve yourself and your teammates.

1. What does this term mean to you as a coach?
- i haven't coached football in years but coaching wrestling as far as summer time goes i always scheduled summer workouts with the expectation that kids who wanted to win would be there. those that didnt wouldnt. plain and simple.

2. What did it mean during YOUR playing days?
- as a HS football player 12 / 13 years ago i never thought twice about the weightroom or "voluntary" workouts. i lived in the WR anyways so it wasn't an issue for me.

3. What do you expect from your players when using this term?
- again as mentioned above i expect those that want to succeed will be there and the rest won't. normally in my experience those that try to show up in november after doing nothing after March don't make it very far anyways.
