We have some holes to fill in the Rider line-up. Lost some key horses. The Williams kid should do fine at QB. Who will be at RB now that Ramey, Prather have graduated?

Region 20 lost Bishop Ready, Badin, and St. Henry so opens up a few playoff postitions

Good point Ready, and good luck to you guys back in D-4.
WJ just missed going to D-6 by 2 boys.
I think they should of moved WJ back to reg. 19 with Academy & Grandview which was WJ's longtime home for many years.
With Ready, Badin, Cin. Hills Christian Academy, East Clinton & St. Henry leaving that brings in Madison Plains, Cincinnati Purcell Marian, Marion Elgin, Marion Pleasant & Covington.
Pleasant is always a power but has been down the last few years and Covington is always a 10-0 team in D-6.
They usually don't play a real tough schedule that prepares them for the playoffs.
Even though they beat a MAC team and a very good (9-1) Ansonia team last year.

Midnight Madness is coming up for the Roughriders on June 3rd at midnight. This will be a chance for everyone to get a look at the upcoming 11-12 WJ team.
I wouldn't just yet seal down the QB spot, it is yearly for that.
Anyone could step up for that.
I would think that Ryan Love might get the RB spot, he is a very good athlete like his brother was.
He played some WR last year as a soph and made some good grabs.
The riders will be young this year but strong and physical.
Which if your looking forward as a fan, about WJ football WOW!

RR PRIDE, If I remember correctly they tried Ryan Love at the tb spot a couple years ago and it didnt work out so well for him. But im sure someone will step up and fill that spot, we really need him at wr i think, wj always has a decent tb!

The season is quickly approaching with summer lifting about month away and of course Midnight Madness this Friday. I am not quite sure of Buecher's policy on playing the younger kids but I do know that Sam Kershaw and Joey Inks saw a lot of playing time their freshmen year.. Mitchell Denes is a stellar athlete that will be a freshmen this football season. After injuring his shoulder early in the season last year, I am looking for this kid to be eyeing the QB spot so Williams may have some competition.

As for RB, Chaney Fulton may be a good pick.. He is a pretty good athlete and great ball handling skills. That would leave the starting TE spot open which should go to Dalton Greenwalt. Greenwalt didn't get to play much last season but he was a star for the JV team and has great hands and amazing focus. If you were at one of the early games of the season you may have seen his spectacular diving catch. He is a big kid so if things go according to plan he could be quite an asset to both offense and defense. Ryan Love would be a toss up for WR and RB, he did very well last season and he was only a Sophomore so maybe now that he has a season worth of knowledge and 3 months to work he can improve and be an elite WR.

Have also been hearing talk around town, probably just rumors, that Seth Casto from Madison Plains is bringing his talents to WJ.. Anybody know if there is any truth to that?

sham, if you get casto than wj just improved by a couple wins if not, you'll struggle to make the playoffs with a very soft ten game schedule. I feel bad for mp's this school has been a complete disaster for as long as i can remember. they really need to move to a league where they can compete and the kids can get some confidence.imo.

To make it official, Seth Casto and his family are moving to WJ.
They just got a house today and will start moving in ASAP.
The move has been in the process for awhile and really got moving even faster after the new coach at MP decided to run the option offense this season.
I don't look for the Casto family to be the only family to make the move on the off season either.
Sources tell me that at least up to 5 more families might be making the move out of the MP district.
Not saying these families are moving to WJ but I don't believe they are staying at MP.
I don't think that will guarantee him the QB spot at WJ but I would say that he would be my choice this season.
Coach B. won't look down on him or favor him in any way this season,
coach B. always gives each position to the player that deserves it and earns it regardless if they are a freshman or senior.
From what I have seen of the kid growing up, he has talent.
He can throw the ball a mile and is accurate when givin a second to throw the ball.
He can run and is tough as a LB considering he played QB and LB in middle school.
Seth will be at midnight madness watching but not participating Friday night and I would bet that there will be a few of his friends from MP with him.
Seth does have friends already at WJ so he will not go in not knowing anyone and I bet those friends are pretty excited right now.

As for the MP program, well the all mighty Barry Blackstone couldn't win more then 3 games in 2 years and he had some descent kids to work with.
Now, if MP has enough kids to have a football team this season, it will be the same old dismal result.
Well, I don't think that they will even beat Cedarville this season and that Dayton team is off their schedule.
The best thing that MP needs to do is to buy their way out of that league, because they are not competitive anymore in any sport.
They dropped this season to D-5 in football, but I don't believe that will ever help them because I don't ever see them reaching the playoffs.
I really don't see a league that they could be competitive in, at least in football anyways.

Not to take anything away from our team this year because we DO have a number of talented kids coming back... but we did take quite a hit with the senior class that just graduated. I'm sure that the boys as well as the town will appreciate the help we can get, after all we are a football town and hopefully Casto can find his niche here at WJ.

Yes, he most definitely was... So hopefully the combo of Williams and Casto can make up for that loss. Also, Freshmen QB Mitch Denes will finally be in HS this year. Even though he is just a freshmen I think he may get to see some time at QB, outstanding three sport athlete.

Don't take my post as if I'm saying that Seth is coming to WJ this season and it will be nice because we need some help this year.
Even if he didn't come to WJ this season I still believe that the riders will have another great season and as far as it goes for me, I don't think we need him to make us a better team.
All I was pretty much doing is clearing the air of rumors.
Seth began his career as a Roughrider when he started playing football at the D-1 level and moved out when he started playing middle school football.
Seth is in my family by marriage and I have talked to him for years about football and only wanted the best for him and I hate that it has taken this long for him and his family to make this move.

DJ Gray was a great athlete! I think he would have been a very good WR as well.

I think that Cody would make a much better WR and let Casto run the QB spot. As for Denes, coach B hasn't played a freshman since Joey Inks and

WJ to me is still undefeated in the league.
I couldn't tell you when Prep beat WJ in 2008 how many ineligible players they had but I bet a years worth of paychecks it was more then 1. LOL!
Yes, WJ lost a lot, but they have the last 5 seasons and have been able to reload. This is in part to the great coaching staff, the commitment of the players and the support of the community.

Yes, I agree that WJ needs to bulk up the non-league schedule and that the MSL needs to realign the teams and bulk up the league some and to make the MSL a little more competitive.

WJ will be young this year but with the talent that will return next year and the year after, I believe they will finally get the monkey off their backs known as the MAC and finally reach the promised land once again.

Another successful night of midnight madness at Kile field this morning.
The crowd has grown over the years so much that it looks like a scrimmage game when you are coming up on the parking lot.
Looked like around 65 boys there tonight which is pretty good numbers even including the freshman.
The Casto boy was there in attendance but not yet participating in the drills.
He looked very excited and was talking with a lot of people in attendance.
He says he is very excited and can't wait to become a roughrider and join the other guys in the weight room.

Coach Patterson's team came in 2nd place tonight so congrats RR4L. At least you guys got the cold Gatorade.
And congrats coach Jeff, looks like you have lost 100 pounds.
I haven't seen you this off season and almost didn't recognize you being that thin.

I don't know why the coach from Plains would say that, I've talked to a lot of the WJ boys and their parents and from what they are saying Seth will be a welcomed addition to the team. I don't think these boys see a newcomer as a threat, just as somebody who could potentially make their team better.

And only summer will tell about starting positions come August 26th.. good luck to all the boys because this summer is going to be intense.

Good question Sham!

In middle school Seth played MLB on defense and had a couple pick 6's which is not bad considering he was the starting QB.
Which brings us to the main question here.
What other positions could he play?
RB/FB would be a good position for him in my mind.
But what gets me is, he has an older brother that is 6-4 that played QB in HS so I don't know if he will hit a growth spurt maybe this summer or not.
His dad is also pretty tall, at least 6-1 but going into your junior season most of your growing is over.
So, we will have to let the summer and 2-a-days sort everything and everyone out.

If you had to pick, from who is left from last year (strarters and non) who would be your starting offensive unit. The offense took quite a hit but I think that once the QB spot is wrapped up some questions will be easier to answer. Williams could go QB but I think he has better hands and is an excellent routte runner. Chaney Fulton was the starting TE but I could see either him or Ryan Love filling in at RB or even Chaney's younger brother Hayden. Dalton Greenwalt would be my pick for TE/WR.. he has good hands and would be a big asset to line O-Line also. David Kelly and possibly Corey Ginn could step into other positions on the line as well, both are big boys. John Flucke could be a pretty good WR but we didnt see much of him last season. There are so many more boys on the roster that will probably shine this season now that spots have come open. I can't wait until August 26th!

shammmwowww99
06-14-2011, 10:36 PM
well, like moe said... its hard to be good in any game situation when you are running for dear life. if Seth Casto is better than any of our boys here he will be starting QB. He didn't stand a chance at Plains and didnt really run the show there, I mean he is only just now a junior.. Not every sophomore starting QB can be a DJ Mendenhall, but with a good line to protect him and a winning tradition at WJ I wouldn't count him out just yet. At least wait until its time to put pads on at practice, I mean they are just barely into their lifting schedule.

As far as the concerns about the line, I'm sure Coach B and the line staff will get them sorted out. You do hve to remember that we will probably be seeing a lot of new faces on Friday nights so if some of the WR's are trying to bulk up to take a less glamourous position on the O-Line then maybe its for the best. Some kids aren't willing to take positions that don't get much attention so for a WR to make a move to the line shows a dedication and willingness to help his team where it is needed.

i agree about the dedication thing but it scares me to think that there having to move these kids with no experiance when it sounds like the kids that have been playing oline are just being lazy. its a complete different game coming from wr to oline. you have to be meaner, tougher, and strong headed to play with the big boys and that was something our wr last year lacked. if you can get a wr to play straight dirty like an olinemen would do, they would be an all state wr like Zach Williams. THats why the kid was so good was cause we was nasty, which this team is gonna need to learn off of

Moe, I agree with what you said about being mean. Having WR move to O-Line may get us through the regular season unscathed but come playoff time this team may be in trouble. Last season Coldwater demolished our O-Line physically and mentally. Our guys need to toughen up and basically learn how to be ruthless a**holes on the field because that how you win games, you have to want it more and do what it takes to get it.

The team will start to come together well after camp.
A lot of positions will start to get filled and the coaches will start to get a good idea come August 1st when 2 a days start who are going to be in what positions.
I still think that Casto may get QB because Williams proved last year that he was a much better WR then QB.
Even though when he came in for Gray during the LH game, Cody did a good job moving the offense.
Joining him at WR should be Lowe, Love, Flucke and maybe even soph
N. Mendenhall.
As for the TE spot, WJ will have the luxury of running a 2 TE set if they want with Greenwalt & Fulton.
Or Greenwalt could go back to the line where he played growing up.
Blair could be FB again or even Mendenhall.
RB's could be Gavin Smith or maybe a soph?
O-line, you have Ginn, Kelly, Turner, Walton and you have a few soph's that might get the job. Kirk, McAninch & Doran.
This is considering these kids are still playing this season!
Don't be surprised to see a few soph's playing on Friday night this season either.

Everything will come together come August 26th in Mechanicsburg.
Coach Buescher, Coach Koehler & Coach Adams along with the rest of the coaching staff will have the boys ready to go.

That sounds like a perfect lineup. Hopefully the kids will be dedicated because this is going to be some what of a rebuilding season but with the amount of talent thats coming through the HS right now WJ could very well keep up the winning tradition.

I got the word tonight that West Jeff has finally got a new PA system for Kile field. Long time coming!
The new wireless system will be or has been installed by the same company that installed the PA system at Huntington Park in downtown Columbus.
The system will have wireless mics for the coaches upstairs and on the field.
The referee will have his own wireless mic.
The system will also be equipped with I-pod docks so music can be played for warm ups before games and graduation ceremonies will be much better in the future.
Once completed, Kile field will be one of the top D-5 high school football complexes in the state.

Well its definitely been a hot week but the week of camp at the high school is over and I've been hearing good things. Otterbein is just four days away and after that only 37 days until kickoff! I for one am very excited for this upcoming season, I believe we are going to have a few stars emerge for the Riders... mainly some seniors who have been chomping at the bit to get some decent playing time.

Has anybody heard how Seth Casto is mixing in with the boys? It can be tough coming in to a new school but it doesn't help when your old school was one of our oldest rivals. However if I know one thing its that these boys want to win so hopefully they've welcomed him with open arms.

Couple questions GCdawgDad.
What grade is this kid in and what positions can he play on defense if he has to?

Also, has it taken awhile for his paperwork to go through?
The Casto family has been waiting a long time.
I believe that today has been 1 month when I talked to his dad the other day.

They are missing valuable time right now in camp and especially this week at Otterbein.

He is going to be a jr. this year and can play Safety on D if needed. He hasn't been waiting on the paperwork too long and it shouldn't be much of an issue since it is a custody change. His stuff is already moved in and he's just waiting on the ok. He has been training with his dad and an couple ex All American college WR from Otterbein and he is going to Oklahoma University on the 24th & 25th for the National Underclassmen U100 Invite only camp where Rivals, Scout.com, ESPN, 24/7 Sports as well as the NUC All American selection team. He got invited from his showing at the OSU football camp last month. He will be ready to compete once OHSAA accepts his eligibilty. I know he's looking forward to joining the team ASAP. Thanks Dawgdad!

Good info for us and sounds like the kid is a great athlete.

A safety is one thing that I know of that WJ was looking for on D and I believe that Casto can play it as well.

Like I said, I'm not really sure why it is taking so long on his paperwork and it never takes this long for paperwork to go through.

WJ has had 2 QB's from 2005-2009 not including the 1 game that Pearson played hurt in 2007.

It's hard to forget it since he broke numerous school records and played the entire game with broken ribs and a punctured lung he received early on the Riders 1st or 2nd offensive play from scrimmage.

So, this will be the 3rd QB in as many years for WJ.

Not having the luxury of a returning QB wasn't a problem last season when DJ Gray took over.

Gray helped lead WJ to another league title (5 straight), a 10-0 season and a birth in the regional finals.

So let's see who gets the job this season.

I believe that WJ will have a JR QB this season because Williams is a much better WR and would benefit the team a lot more at the WR spot.

But, what do I know!

That is why the coaching staff has been able to do what they have done at WJ in this short time.

Casto just got word this morning that he is cleared to play this season.

So pending his drug test he is good to go to start practice ASAP.

As far as we know right now, no.

But a lot of times teams are thrown in there at the last minute like we have seen in the past.

As of now just Circlevile, Logan Elm, Westfall, Jonathan Alder.

Has anybody heard anything more about the kid coming from GC... as of today most of the boys have not heard one thing about him, is he still coming to WJ?

GCdawgDad
07-27-2011, 10:40 PM
His name is Jake Rust and he is waiting to get a ruling from OHSAA. As far as I know there shouldn't be an issue. The young man just received a Co-MVP award at the Top100 Camp at Oklahoma University. Hopefully he can get with the team by 2in a days so he can start learning the offense and compete for a job. WJ could be headed for a 6thjob straight playoff appearance.

roughriderpride

Ran into a coach yesterday and they didn't know nothing either but with Casto it took him a month for his paperwork to go through.
This is their (OHSAA) busiest time of the year, so it might take a little while longer.

GCdawgDad
07-28-2011, 04:26 PM
You are right, it can take as long as OHSAA wants it to which could cost him all or most of 2 a days. I just know that he wants to get with his new teammates asap. Not sure if the coach would let him come watch practice till he is eligible. Hopefully he fits in with the players and coaches. He is a very well mannered and friendly young man. Im sure he will enjoy all of the supportive people in the West Jeff community. They are awesome fans!

Here is his profile on scoutingohio.com.

Jake looks like a good fit for the Riders.

shammmwowww99
07-30-2011, 02:54 PM
Im sure Coach Buescher would let him come to practice, especially since its crunch time and he needs to start learning the offense and defense. If Jake is as excited as you say he is then the coaches surely wouldnt have a problem. Hopefully his transfer stuff can get through quickly because it would really be unfortunate to deny such an athlete the opportunity to play in this great WJ system.

GCdawgDad
07-30-2011, 04:30 PM
Coach told his dad he can't be part of the team until OHSAA rules. He can't even come watch practice. Whether he's eligible this week, halfway through the season or not at all, he still wants to get with the team as soon as he can. Only time will tell.

roughriderpride
07-31-2011, 07:53 AM
He is probably looking at a month turn around on an answer.
It took Casto a month for him to get his answer and while they wait they are not allowed any of the practices, weightlifting or nothing that the team has going on.
It is a waiting period that has to feel like an eternity to a player, especially at this time of the year.

GCdawgDad
07-31-2011, 08:22 AM
OHSAA works at their own pace and there is no way to rush them. Jake knew ahead of time how long this could take but I'm sure it feels like eternity waiting. He's been lifting and throwing just about everyday. Hopefully this gets ruled on soon so he can get with his teammates and become an official Roughrider. He just wants to be welcomed and fit in. He also plays basketball and baseball.

How did West Jeff fair in the 7 on 7?

How does West Jeff matchup with Mechanicsburg in Week 1 this year? That used to be a heck of a rivlary but the riders have put some distance between these 2 programs recently.

Best of luck to the Riders this season.

roughriderpride

Well, Out of the 5 teams there (WJ, Alder, Westfall, Logan Elm & Huntington) Westfall by far was the better team.
Solid QB, WR's already running good routes.
Alder & WJ looked really young which I knew that WJ would be young this season maybe starting several underclassman with the small senior class coming in.

The West Jeff matchup with Mechanicsburg in Week 1 has produced some exciting thrillers (2006,2007,2008).
But the last 2 seasons the Burg has been down some and I don't know if this will be the year or maybe 1 more for them to break out of the slide.
With 6 starters back on each side of the ball they will have that advantage over WJ.
But, Burg will also break in a whole new backfield.
Their QB should be Austin Black 5'9" 155 (Jr) QB/FS
Max Erwin 5'8" 175 (Jr) FB/DT
Thomas Bethel 6'0" 175 (Sr) TB/DL
Their 2010 record was 4-6 and they took quite a beaten after scoring on their 1st play from scrimmage losing 35-7 at WJ.
Their JV record was 5-4 and WJ also beat them up there by a pretty good margine as well.

But a new year brings new things in HSF and we will see if WJ can make it 3 years in a row or Burg will start a streak of their own.

More bad news for WJ, it's a rumor that I heard tonight but from a pretty solid source.
Jake was declared ineligible by the OHSAA to play football at WJ.
He will be able to attend, but not play.
With that ruling by the OHSAA I believe even if he stays at GC or goes anywhere he will be ineligible to play football as well this season.
Some rules ############, I don't know the whole story and if I did I wouldn't put it on here for Jake's privacy.

roughriderpride
08-08-2011, 03:41 AM
Yeah, Casto was there for the 7 on 7 and he made the 2nd camp as well before 2 a days started.
He was only a spectator at the 7 on 7 but as bad as our QB 's looked, I would have through a/an helmet on him and just gave him a shot.
The Logan Elm scrimmage will give wj a big test to show them where they are already.
LE will be a much improved team this season over last.
I know that it is the 1st scrimmage but if wj can hold their own the season might be a pretty good one.
All, then the following week is Westfall which is another team that will be much improved this season.

shammmwowww99
08-08-2011, 01:42 PM
Thats really unfortunate if its true. I think somebody said he came to WJ as a result of a custody change. If thats the case its pretty crappy of the OHSAA to deny a kid an entire season due to circumstances beyond his control. Poor kid, being punished for no reason.

rrpride, i kno that williams has been at qb , but who else is getting snaps in practice? who was the jv qb last year?

I believe that Hayden Murry was jv qb last year.
9th grade qb was Trey Morris and he isn't even playing this year and he had the potential to be a very good HS qb.
Rick Ratcliff was the 9th grade RB, he isn't playing either, now I don't know if that's because of an injury or not.
He tore his knee up last year half way through the season.
Nick Mendenhall (soph) at 6'3" I would think that he has some of his brothers skills to play qb.

So, if Cody is the main guy right now and I have heard a bunch of different things about the Casto kid.
I have heard he has been at qb, rb and wr on offense and on D at DB.

I think that they have the talent to put another good team together.
I believe that they have only 7-8 sr's and that will look good for next season.

The defense will be anchored by Fulton, Blair, Ginn and some DB help from Williams.
Last year the 4 combined for
Tot Tack- 239
TFL- 43.5
Sacks- 19
INT's- 6

On offense, Williams caught 15 passes for 257 yards (17.1) & 2 TD's.

Fulton, caught 16 for 373 (23.3) & 4 TD's

A lot of people will say that those are not big #'s, but when you look at the stats for wj, so many boys contribute with their offense and defense.

This year I would think that Fulton will be used much more in the offense and on defense he will be a force.

marknjen912
08-13-2011, 01:33 AM
Williams and Fulton named as the last 2 captains today and has both these kids super motivated. Word is Williams has the for sure job, but different plays have him running. Seth is meshing with the team well, and while some of the kids were looking forward to Rust playing are disappointed about the rumor, a friend of the Rust's say they were prepared for an outcome of him sitting this year. Anxious to see them on the field this morning against Logan Elm...I think some will be surprised at the actual talents of some of the underclassmen, and how much they will step up and compliment the already strong players. Go Riders!

marknjen912

marknjen912
08-13-2011, 01:53 PM
I didn't get to attend either, but I guess it wasn't an actual "game scrimmage" few plays here and a few plays here, with some kids being taken out by Coach B for unsportsmanlike ??? Hope these boys keep the passion, but keep their heads as well, or we may be in for a very long season.

marknjen912
08-13-2011, 02:36 PM
Fulton was taken out for excessive roughness, but says all is good.

roughriderpride
08-13-2011, 02:38 PM
Oh, lord!!
Well like you said, if it was passion that's fine especially for the younger kids this early trying to control that passion.
There are not a lot of seniors or returning starters like the past few seasons but the leadership has always been there.
But these few seniors and upper classman will have to step up and make sure to show the younger players how to control their emotion and that passion on the field.
Hopefully, it was not getting beat on plays and the boys not thinking they could beat this team.
Because if it wasn't, then it WILL be a long season!

marknjen912
08-13-2011, 02:46 PM
Agreed, Fulton has always been very passionate and aggressive, he wants to finish his senior year with a bang. As I told him, you will not make much of an impact on the field from the bench. He will get it reigned in as he always does. I'm eager to hear how the underclassmen showed up today, heard Chaney's youunger brother was in on Varsity?
