Next Wednesday, at NDA, the long awaited rivalry match between NDA and SUA. Any predictions as to this match? Stands, you should have some insight on this one.

TSUA has looked very strong so far this year. I would say TSUA over NDA in a quick 3. This is a league match and anything can happen, but TSUA is the real deal this year.

I hope Gary can the kids ready for this one but I have heard the same about TSUA.
Anybody got a start time for that one. May try to jump up there after work

Quick is what I think as well. Don't go out to concessions and wait in line.

Anything can happen in a big rivalry match like this one. I am sure the SUA players are not thinking it will be a quick anything, except maybe the ride over there. Best of luck to all involved at all 3 levels, should be an exciting night of volleyball.

gamrvb,

Who? Me? Comment on the annual "Nun-chucks Match"
aka "The War of Westfield Shopping Town(Formerly Franklin Park Fury)" aka "We Don't Need No Stinkin' Boys Slugfest"
aka "The Plaid vs. Plain Skirt Showdown"
aka "Players Club Dues = Parents No Cruise Carnival"
(Ok, I'll stop with the subtle attempt at hype and humor.)

Well, many of you are predicting a one sided match based on some early season results, past performance, new coaches, and roster changes. I suggest all that be thrown out the window.

This is a RIVALRY match and performances will be affected by passion and pressure, unmatched at any other time on the season. Practice and preparation will peak, but productivity of the "go to" players, as well as girls stepping up on the big stage, are all that will count next Wednesday night.

Now, as much as I'd like to share a ton of thoughts on both teams, I'm just a little too close to the action to comment to much on this contest. :) I'm not going to risk fueling the wrong fire with a personal observation, however brilliant it may be!

I have a lot of respect for the players, coaches and families for both teams and only hope the girls play the best volleyball they have in them next Wednesday night. I may lean toward wishing that one of them is at least two points better in the last set. ;)

Here is where I will go out on a limb and make two specific predictions.

1. I've heard that NDA's new coach Gary Freed is a top shelf beach volleyball player. If he covers the floor of the NDA gym with sand, the Eagles may have a definitive advantage!

2. The PA announcer at NDA will not be as dynamic, or handsome as the one at SUA last year!

I think, given the rivalry here, that it won't be as "quick" as the posters are suggesting. The match is at NDA, so that is an advantage to them and they are the underdog, another potential advantage to them. I think the roles were reversed a couple years ago, and TSUA beat them at Perrysburg, which as I recall, was quite an upset.

I do think; however, the match goes to TSUA. My prediction is the first set will be somewhat close, but TSUA wins. Next two sets, not so close, with TSUA winning the match. I think TSUA has strength at each position and depth on their bench. NDA, not sure they have settled on a lineup, and will struggle, become frustrated and commit errors as the match progresses. I think NDA will need their back row to play awesome as TSUA seems to have a lot of fire power in their front row. I don't think NDA has the size in the front row to get in many blocks which will put a lot of burden on the back row. But you never know. I think the better match will be NDA and Central, which should be more evenly matched. I predict NDA the winner in that match.

Freshman matches usually start at 5. Given the size of the NDA gym, my guess is they will sell out before Varsity starts so I would get there early.

It is always a fun atmosphere.

So my pick for the score: 25-20, 25-15, 25-12.

Out of curiosity, how do 25-20, 25-15, 25-12 not make it a quick match? If you thought that by "quick" I was implying that NDA would score less than 10 each game, that is incorrect. As for your predictions, however, I agree.

I think there will be good volleys and to me, a quick match is where the other team struggles to return serve. No volleys, nothing exciting. So I think that it will take longer to finish and not be a "quick" match. I didn't read anything into your message. A few posters thought it would be quick, I think it will not be quick, but in the end TSUA will win.

It came to mind that an additional reason that it is much harder to predict outcomes on this match is that so many of the girls play high level club ball. As you’ll see, in the list below, a number are actually play for the same team/club during the travel season! We are very fortunate to have some great clubs to choose from in NW Ohio, allowing the girls to get great training from many dedicated coaches. Thanks to all the coaches, directors, trainers and assorted others that help keep the girls in top form prior to HS season.

Now, with so many players that have played with, and against, each other for years, this is continues to be a match at a different level than almost any week of the year prior to tournaments. Look forward to seeing a packed house for some great V-ball next Wednesday!

Okay, in about 48 hours we should know the outcome of this match. For those of you that can't make it, or can't get in because it's sold out, the match will be shown live on BCSN.

It's scheduled to start at 7:00pm, but last year the Frosh and JV matches were hard fought, long battles, that went to three sets making for a VERY late night!

Heard of some bumps and bruises on both teams, so let's hope everybody is healthy to battle for bragging rights!

Well, wasn't quite the match many were hoping for tonight. Looks like Timm1 and friends were not too far off with calling for a "quick" match. No marathon into the late evening like last year as I had anticipated.

The assesment would be that it was on off night for the Eagles and the Arrows seemed to be in "The Zone" I would surmise that if these teams meet again, in City or District playoffs, that it will be a much more competitive match.

Hats off to both teams for playing hard in a nerve racking environment! Both schools had awesome crowds and were LOUD!

Good luck to both teams, and anticipating the upcoming contests with CCHS fNDA next Wednesday, and SUA on Wednesday October 6th for the "Volley for the Cure" match.

Why was it an off night for the Eagles? Could it have been because the Arrows made it an off night for them?

As previously stated, TSUA is the real deal this year. By the way, that was a quick 3 by any and all standards.

Watched the replay when I got home and saw at least 4 DI caliber kids with TSU. Wow was that an impressive performance! Congrats to Coach Buck for an incredible job with one of the most impressive High School teams I've ever seen. Ursuline must be dang good.

I'll go on record and say that the upcoming CCHS match will last longer.

High hopes for a state run with this Toledo Ursula team.

My prediction for TSUA and CCH is that it will be quicker than NDA; although Sour Grapes, we will have to agree to disagree as to whether last night's match was quick. I was there, as was In the Stands and maybe Timm, and we all seem to be in agreement it wasn't quick. Even Coach Buck was quoted in the Toledo Blade as to TSUA winning the long rallies. OK, maybe the first set was quick.

Timm, from what I know of the players on the Court last night, 1 NDA and 2 SUA seniors have already verbally committed to D1 programs. Dayton was there last night showing someone some love. From my observation, likely most of the TSUA team and a number from NDA are easily D1 material. So I would up your count as to potential D1 players, although, I know your prediction only went to the number from TSUA.

TSUA vs. CCH prediction TSUA in three. 25-10, 25-12, 25-13.

The more exciting of the evening's matches was the JV match. Close and the teams seemed to be evenly matched. My guess is that the JV teams from either school could beat most of the other schools in the City League's Varsity teams on any given night, excluding CCH.

As to NDA vs. CCH, my nod to NDA, in four 25-19, 25-22, 19-25 and 25-15.

I think both NDA and TSUA JV and Freshman win over CCH JV and Freshman.

CCH? How about some names spelled out? It's easy to forget that there are fans from all over Ohio (and further) reading these threads. It seems like every school in Toledo and Cincy is know by their initials.....very confusing to some of us. I'll get off my soap box.....but I'd like to suggest that we at least spell names out in the header to the threads....thanks folks! :)

25-7, 25-16, 25-17 is much quicker than expected. The outcome and time of the match delayed only by the timeouts that Freed, ND's (Notre Dame) coach had to call to help stop the bleeding. Have to expect quick matches like that if you can't pass the ball. Sounds like too many free points and being out of system all night makes it like Christmas for good opposing teams. Teams like that feast on weakness.

gambrvb
09-23-2010, 02:41 PM
So your predictions on the St. Ursula/ Central Catholic match?

Not sure of your reference about free points. Heard of free balls, but maybe more explanation of free points. If you mean hitting errors for NDA, then yes, I agree with you there.

Also your reference to being out of system all night, not real sure about that one either.

I heard due to reduced enrollment the schools are merging and the volleball team will now be competing nationally against California and Texas schools. Henceforth the new acronym will be:
