I predict WCH will beat Warren. The game I saw, Warren struggled against a 2-3 zone all night. The Cunningham kid was the only one that could stretch the defense. However, they are a physical team, with some athletic guys. They did beat Chilly without their best player. I'm sure Court House will run their 1-3-1. I can see it giving Warren problems.
In the other matchup, Waverly will have to play their best to beat Stiverson the Great. Logan Elm handled them pretty good on opening night. I know Waverly has improved since then, but so has the Braves. I hope I can find someone to ride with to Athens. Stumble, you got room?
My wife and I and another couple are going. I have a BMW, but it doesn't have as much room in it as you would expect. Also, we're leaving about noon, my wife wants to see the new high school at Jackson, since she grew up near there.

I wouldn't be surprised if you're right on both counts. But, both Waverly and Warren are pretty good teams (Waverly has awesome size). Both are capable of upsets. I wouldn't want to have money on either game.

Stumble did you play ball with any of these guys? Bill Breeze, Fred Cluff or Gipper Fehring? Just some friends of the family.

I regret to say that I am considerably older than any of them. Cluff is dead. I'm still alive (at least most of me). I remember when all of them played, but, I was long out of school by then. John Cummings, pound for pound one of the best basketball players I ever saw (in this area) played with Cluff. I'm just an old has-been (or, never-was). But, I love high school basketball, and it is not unusual for me to drive 150 miles one way to see a big game.

I would say you must take pretty good care of yourself then or you just have really good genes. I hope I am still able to go to ballgames at your age. I sure would like to sit and listen to your stories of local basketball from over the years. Maybe you should right a book. "The history of southeastern basketball" by Stumblebum.

Jackson just took the game to a new level. We have never had an all-around better player than him in this area, in my opinion.
But, that is just my opinion. I don't try to impose my opinions on other people. You may agree - or, you may disagree. But, I've seen nearly all the great ones play, going back into the 1940s.
I can remember when the players on the floor were not allowed to huddle with the coach during time outs. Instead, they gathered under each basket and the manager pushed a little cart (with roller-skate wheels) out to them. The cart contained towels, water, a lemon cut in halves, and (often) a threatening note from the coach.
Sometime right around 1949 or 1950, the rule was changed, and players have been permitted to huddle at the bench, with the coach, ever since. Nowadays, the coach goes out on the floor nearly under the basket while the game is going on.

Stumblebum did you not see Dustin Pfeifer play for WCH? At 5'8" and 155lbs. he had to be pound for pound right up there. 1700+ career points and the division II player of the year by the coaches his Sr. year. Chosen over a guy by the name of Lebron. Not trying to start a debate here, just wondered if you saw him play?

I saw him play once, that I can remember. That was against McClain, in the tournament at Chillicothe. He was an excellent player, but, as I say, I only saw him once. Phil Snow, of Sabina was a great player, Bobby Hooper was a great player. There have been a lot of great ones. But, Jackson was 6'5" and he could play anywhere on the court and get the job done. I look for him to be a great coach, when his playing days are over.
I'm not from Greenfield, but I followed the Tigers a lot during the Jackson years. After what I saw last Wednesday night, I doubt if I follow them much for a while.
Bye the way, the little Robertson kid who played for WCH & Muskingum College was a pretty good player, too.

WCH matches up well with Warren I'd say this will be a good game. Don't think Warren can handle WCH's guards and WCH will have to battle Warren's size and athleticism. Warren is not a great offensive team.
Waverly will give LE all they want. I'd look for a 5pt. game either way.

While traveling on 32......turn left at st rt 139 (about 2 miles before getting to the 93 Jackson exit) and go about 2 miles on 139 and you can't miss it on the hill (right side if on 139).....go up the hill and you have to continue around the school and get a good look at the football stadium.
The seeing of the fb stadium is worth the 8 minutes of time you'll spend "out of your way"

WCH & Warren were exactly the same kind of teams. It was like watching a mirror. Warren led all the way. We left with 3:45 remaining to get out (to the pub) ahead of the crowd. Warren had about a 5 point lead. Stringfield must have got hot at the end. WCH's shooting from the field was TERRIBLE for 3 1/2 quarters. I have seen 5th grade games that were more exciting. But, if WCH came back & won, I'm glad. Neither of them has any business playing L.E.

Ironman92 - Jackson's new facility is unbelievable. I never saw a football stadium like that in a high school of that size. It even has artificial grass, doesn't it? Wonder how they keep that mowed so nice? What I would like to know is where did they get the money for something like that? The School Facilities Commission wouldn't pay for a football palace.
What is the population of Jackson (approximately)?

Rugnuts must have just been giving his predictions. I thought he was giving the final scores. Guess I should have looked at the times on his posts. I apologize. But, I was up late last night. I still think WCH was the better team, but, neither was very impressive. Waverly was better than either WCH or Warren and L.E. handled them with very little problem. They will handle Warren with even LESS problem.

Yeah. But, I saw WCH play a couple of other times. They were a better team than Warren. Last night, they couldn't have thrown a rock into the ocean.
Stiverson is a super coach. Waverly led throughout the first half. When they came out for the second half, Waverly wasn't around any more. L.E.'s defense held them to 13 points the entire second half. They could not get an open shot.

It seats around 7,000 and around 7500 total could view the game.
It cost about 4 million dollars and funds were raised privately. Holzer threw a good chunk but majority was from private donors many of which purchased bricks as you enter the stadium.......and the best part...not a bad seat in the house and from atop the home side you can see all over Jackson and farther as it is the highest point in Jackson. Yes, it is field turf.
The school has a very nice gym and also a full size 3 court field house with a walking track around the upper level overlooking the courts.

I sometimes think that kids who don't get to play in the Convo (almost) every year are sometimes overwhelmed by the shear SIZE of the place. WCH couldn't find the baskets. Kyle Slone, who is a terrific shooter, must have shot 4 airballs. Stringfield hit some nice shots, but, also missed seversl easy ones. Oh, well, everybody did their best, Next year is another year.
Here is something I noticed, though. I'm used to seeing McClain down there every year with 3500 fans wearing purple & gold. They sometimes practically fill one whole side of the place. They make more noise than ANY other team's fans. But, WCH couldn't have had more than 600 there. WCH and Greenfield are about 14 miles apart. What is the difference?
Warren must have had 4 or 5 times as many fans there. I know they are closer, but .....

Good question...Greenfield has their issues but, Greenfield always supports thekids. I will say this too they are in a habit of going there. I am not taking away anything from other teams but, it is like LE the last few years. Greenfield going to the convo has been happening since the early 80's. Other schools like WCH goes in spurts.

You can just blame it on the economy like everything else. Thats a lot of gas money driving to Athens. I read that the attendance at the state wrestling tournament was an all time low this year too. Interesting to see what the attendance at the basketball finals will be. Hopefully things pick up next season.

I think with Greenfield it's not just that they're in the habit of going down there, but McClain has a tremendous tradition in high school sports that goes back many, many, many years (clear back to the 1920s), and the people of Greenfield are caught up in it. They are a part of it. McClain has had three All-Americans, and should have had four (Dutch Purdin). It is just a great sports community, and has been for years.

I dont know if anyone reported this or not but:- Logan Elm 24 free-throws Waverly 4. Dont get me wrong the best team won and would probably win again if they played again- but Logan Elm is very aggressive on defense and they didnt foul anymore than that? The game was won in the second half when they face guarded Jake Kretzer and he only got the ball two times in the half- great job by the Braves.

Everyone does. But, it is (part of) the coach's job to have his team at their peak performance level at tournament time. That is one of the things that make some of the great coaches great. Their team is always playing at their peak at tournament time.
