BOX SCORE/STATS

WHAT WE LEARNED

1. Records aren’t meant to broken: For the second straight year a team vying for a state record fifth straight state title was denied. Last year Marion Local saw it’s record 24-game postseason win streak snapped with a 22-20 loss to Kirtland in the D-VI final. The Flyers were trying for their fifth straight championship. This season Coldwater saw its record-tying 24-game postseason win streak snapped and its bid for a fifth straight state title denied by the Crusaders.

2. Third time is the charm: CCC had lost the last two D-V state finals to Coldwater by the combined score of 97-39.

3. Turnovers kill: CCC scored its first nine points off turnovers. The Crusaders in return didn’t commit one.

4. Bigfoot is real: CCC senior kicker Dan Mills set a D-IV finals record with a 48-yard field goal. The kick came on the final play if the first half. The overall finals record is a 56-yard field goal by Cincinnati St. Xavier’s Kevin Kerr in 1998.

5. sMACked: With a chance to win three state titles for the third straight season, the Midwest Athletic Conference was denied it’s second trifecta during that run. Marion Local won the D-VI championship, but Minster (D-VII) and Coldwater fell. The MAC is now 31-13 in state finals (all since 1989).
