The previous two winners were softball teams. Can someone snap or extend the streak? Who will win this year? Here are the nominees…
*Hebron Lakewood Softball (VOTE)
The Lancers completed a perfect season (29-0) and won the program’s fourth state title (first since 2010) with a 7-4 win over Keystone in the D-II state final. Finished No. 1 in state coaches poll.
*Upper Arlington Boys & Girls Lacrosse (VOTE)
The Golden Bears girls team defended their D-I state title (third in four years) and ran their unbeaten streak to 41 games. The boys team? They won their fifth D-I state title in seven years and 16th overall.
*Findlay Liberty-Benton Girls Track & Field (VOTE)
The Eagles won their second straight D-II state title in convincing fashion by doubling up runners-up Alter and Steubenville (52-25).
*Defiance Baseball (VOTE)
Won their second straight D-II state title and third in four years. Program has four titles overall.
*St. Thomas Aquinas Boys & Girls Track & Field (VOTE)
The Knights won the boys program’s first state title (D-III) by a point (36-35) over Columbus Academy. In 2010, STA lost the D-III state title 41-40 to Colonel Crawford. Led by it’s 3,200 relay, which set a new D-III state and state meet record (9:00.84), the STA girls defended their D-III state title. That sweep marks just the fourth time in state history a school has taken home both team titles in the same season.
*St. Clairsville Boys Track & Field (VOTE)
The Red Devils won the program’s first state title and became the first boys program from Belmont County in 40 years to win a state title in track and field with a 33-31 victory over Lexington in D-II.
*Pickerington North Baseball (VOTE)
The Panthers stymied two parochial powers and became just the second Central Ohio school to win the big school state baseball title since 1990 with a 2-1 victory over Cincinnati LaSalle in the D-I final. Beat Cleveland St. Ignatius 5-3 in eight innings in the semifinals.
*Withrow Girls Track & Field (VOTE)
The Tigers won their second straight D-I state title with a 64-53 win over runner-up Gahanna Lincoln. Doubled up third place Coffman (32 points).
The winner receives a framed commemorative award, certificates and bracelets
