Here are the Nominees…
*Cornerstone Christian Boys Basketball (VOTE)
Despite entering the postseason 9-12, the Patriots became the first team since 1994 to win the state title with just 17 wins. They’re also the only team since 1994 to win the state title with double-digit losses (D-III Youngstown Ursuline was 17-10). CC was 8-0 in the tourney. The Patriots beat unanimous No. 1 Lincolnview 72-54 in the final. They beat Wellington School 73-67 in the semifinals.
*Waterford Girls Basketball (VOTE)
A year after losing in the D-IV state final, the Wildcats captured the program’s first state title with a 29-27 win over St. Wendelin in the small school state final. The 29 points set a new state record (all divisions) for fewest points scored by a state champion. Waterford made 23-of-24 FTs en route to beating Cornerstone Christian 52-42 in the semis. The Wildcats were ranked No. 1 in the final National Guard OGBR JJHuddle State Poll. Waterford, which finished 28-1, was undefeated against Ohio teams.
*Urbana Boys Bowling (VOTE)
The Hillclimbers won the program’s first state title with a 3-2 victory over defending champ Coldwater in D-II. Urbana was in the state tournament for the third time but had failed to make the championship round in its previous two trips.
*Lima Central Catholic Boys Basketball (VOTE)
The Thunderbirds advanced to their third straight state final and won the program’s third state title (all since 2010) with a 66-44 win over Cleveland VASJ in D-III.
*Wadsworth Girls Basketball (VOTE)
The Grizzlies won the second state title in program history (first since 1997) and second over Mason with a 60-51 win in the D-I final. The victory avenged an earlier season loss to the Comets, which was the Grizzlies lone blemish all year. Wadsworth beat Reynoldsburg 58-48 in the semis. In two state tournament games the Grizzlies made 43-of-51 FTs. Wadsworth also finished the season ranked No. 1 in the final AP poll.
*St. Xavier Boys Swimming & Diving (VOTE)
The Bombers won their 37th D-I state title and eight straight by scoring a state meet record 398 points. St. X set state meet records in the 200 medley and 400 free relays.
*Troy Girls Bowling (VOTE)
The Trojans won the program’s first state title with a 3-1 win over Beavercreek in the D-I finals at the state tournament. Troy beat North Olmsted and Mentor to reach the finals.
*John Glenn Boys Basketball (VOTE)
The Muskies, who start five guards, finished the season undefeated against Ohio competition and beat Akron SVSM for a second time 76-72 in the D-II final to win the school’s first state title. JG shot 16-of-32 from 3 and made 38 FTs in its two state games.
*Mechanicsburg Girls Bowling (VOTE)
The Indians won the D-II state title for the second time in three years with a 3-1 victory over Napoleon in the finals. Rallied from 2-1 deficit to oust defending state champion Coldwater 3-2 in semifinals.
*Gates Mills Hawken Girls Swimming & Diving (VOTE)
The Hawks won their 18th straight state championship and 17th straight in D-II. It’s their 26th overall title.
