Ohio Lowedown: Ohio well repped on Podium at College Wrestling Championships

Buckeye State delivers NCAA title, 10 of 80 place-winners…

JJH-LoweOhio is well known as a wrestling hotbed. That is not only true at the high school level, but it also manifests itself after high school in terms of collegiate success. Most people know that Ohio State placed third at the NCAA Division I wrestling tournament, but what people may not know is that 31 Ohio high school graduates were among the 330 tournament participants, and that 10 of the 80 All-Americans (place-winners) were natives of the Buckeye State.

Below were the Division I All-Americans from Ohio:
Nathan Tomasello (Ohio State/CVCA) – 3rd at 125 pounds
Dean Heil (Oklahoma State/St. Edward) – champion at 141 pounds
Joey Ward (North Carolina/Moeller) – 7th at 141 pounds
Anthony Collica (Oklahoma State/Solon) – 4th at 149 pounds
Nick Brascetta (Virginia Tech/St. Paris Graham) – 3rd at 157 pounds
Ian Miller (Kent State/Oak Harbor) – 6th at 157 pounds
Isaac Jordan (Wisconsin/St. Paris Graham) – runner-up at 165 pounds
Bo Jordan (Ohio State/St. Paris Graham) – 3rd at 165 pounds
Cody Walters (Ohio/St. Peter Chanel) – 7th at 174 pounds
Ty Walz (Virginia Tech/St. Edward) – 4th at 285 pounds

In addition, the previous weekend was the NCAA Division II and Division III tournaments.

Five Ohio native wrestlers were All-Americans in the Division II tournament:
Cobey Fehr (Notre Dame College/Barberton) – 7th at 141 pounds
Nick Goebel (Findlay/Elmwood) – 3rd at 149 pounds
Huston Evans (Newberry/St. Paris Graham) – 7th at 184 pounds
Joseph Brandt (Ashland/Versailles) – 3rd at 197 pounds
Jake Cramer (Tiffin/Oak Harbor) – 6th at 197 pounds

Seven Ohio native wrestlers were All-Americans in the Division III tournament:
Jacob Spearman (Washington & Jefferson/Lancaster) – 3rd at 125 pounds
Jesse Gunter (Baldwin-Wallace/Coventry) – 5th at 133 pounds
Justin Kihn (Heidelberg/ Kettering Fairmont) – 4th at 141 pounds
Jeremy Border (Mount Union/Caldwell) – 7th at 141 pounds
Dan Mirman (John Carroll/Medina Highland) – 3rd at 149 pounds
Jeff Hojnacki (Messiah/CVCA) – 6th at 165 pounds
A.J. Kowal (Stevens Tech/Princeton) – 3rd at 184 pounds

A pair of Ohio natives were All-Americans during the first weekend of march at the NAIA national tournament:
Davion Caston (Campbellsville/Sandusky) – runner-up at 133 pounds
Sean Black (Campbellsville/Hilliard Darby) – 6th at 165 pounds
