St. Clairsville’s Ferns wins National Guard JJHuddle Ohio High School Football Defensive Player of the Year

You voted, you decided…who had Ohio’s best defensive performance in 2015? Over 94,500 votes were cast and the winner of the 2015 Ohio National Guard JJHuddle Ohio Football Defensive Player of the Year is St. Clairsville’s Brendan Ferns. Ferns outlasted a talented field of nominees.

This year we’re proud to again present the Ohio National Guard JJHuddle Ohio High School Football Defensive Player Of the Year Award.

Over 94,500 votes were cast and the winner is St. Clairsville’s Brendan Ferns. Ferns generated 50,901 votes to outdistance runner-up Jonathon Cooper of Gahanna (Lincoln (37,132 votes).

Ferns will receive a personalized award from the National Guard and JJHuddle.

2015 Winner

*Brendan Ferns, St. Clairsville, sr., LB

U.S. Army All-American selection was named AP Ohio D-IV Defensive Player of the Year and AP All-Eastern District D-IV Defensive Player of the Year after registering more then 130 tackles for the third straight season. Holds 27 scholarship offers. Is undecided.

*Chaz Westfall, Perrysburg, sr., LB

Named AP D-II Ohio Defensive Player of the Year, AP All-Northwest District Defensive Player of the Year, First Team All-Ohio and Toledo Blade Player of the Year. Had 167 tackles and 29 TFL this season. Ends career with 387 tackles and 69 TFL.

*Tobias Gilliam, Wayne, sr., DB

Kentucky recruit named GWOC Central Division Defensive Player of the Year, AP Southwest District D-I Defensive Player of the Year and First Team AP All-Ohio. Had 77 tackles, two FF, two INTs and 1.5 sacks. Had 162-career tackles and seven INTs. Two-time first team All-GWOC.

*Michael O’Malley, St. Edward, Sr., DE

Named AP Division I Ohio Defensive Player of the Year, AP Northeast Lakes District Defensive Player of the Year and First Team All-Ohio. Had 123 tackles and 19 sacks, including 3.5 in the state championship game.

*Jonathon Cooper, Gahanna Lincoln, sr., DL

U.S. Army All-American selection and Ohio State commit had 67 tackles, 18 TFL and 12 sacks. Named First Team All-Ohio, AP Central District D-I Defensive Player of the Year and was the Columbus Dispatch’s All-Metro Team Defensive Player of the Year.

*Zach Sandwisch, Toledo Central Catholic, sr., LB

West Virginia commit was named AP D-III Ohio Defensive Player of the Year. Had 123 tackles and 13 TFL.

*Evan Madden, Kirtland, sr., LB

Named AP D-VI Ohio Defensive Player of the Year, AP Northeast xx District Defensive Player of the Year and First Team All-Ohio. Had 110 tackles, five FF and three sacks during regular season. Had five tackles, two TFL and a blocked PAT in state championship game.
