Frantz, Pasteur, CalPreps: Who We Say Wins (and Why) the D-III Regional Semifinals

EFvsDP

For the past four years playoff point guru Drew Pasteur and I have engaged in a friendly competition of playoff pick’em. His Formula vs My Feel. It’s been good fun and highly competitive. This season it continues. Here’s a look at who we think wins in Week 12. As for Week 11? We tied 94-18 each. That’s the second time in three years we’ve tied in the regional quarters. My key wins? Colerain, Mapleton and Columbus DeSales. DP’s big wins? Columbiana Crestview, Bowling Green and West Liberty-Salem.

As always, enjoy or destroy.

2014 D-III REGIONAL SEMIFINAL PICKS

Region 7

1 Hubbard (11-0) vs. 4 Aurora (10-1) at Niles McKinley Bo Rein Stadium
EF: Hubbard
DP: Hubbard (11-0) by 10 (74%) vs Aurora (10-1)
CP: Hubbard 38-27
*Hubbard seems destined for the regional final and more. The Eagles feature senior RB and Michigan State commit Larry Scott who became the Mahoning Valley’s all-time leading rusher last week (6,619 yards). He has 2,274 yards this season.

2 Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary (9-2) vs. 6 Poland Seminary (10-1) at Uniontown Lake Alumni Field
EF: SVSM
DP: St Vincent-St Mary (Akron) (9-2) by 10 (73%) vs Poland Seminary (Poland) (10-1)
CP: SVSM 27-21
*The Irish are looking to win their third straight state championship and are very much capable. SVSM has seven in a row including wins over Akron Hoban, GlenOak, Thurgood Marshall, Ursuline and Massillon Washington. Poland’s lone loss is to Hubbard.

Region 8

1 Toledo Central Catholic (9-2) vs. 4 Bowling Green (8-3) at Millbury Lake Community Stadium
EF: Toledo Central Catholic
DP: Central Catholic (Toledo) (9-2) by 26 (95%) vs Bowling Green (8-3)

2 Clyde (9-2) vs. 3 Norwalk (11-0) at Sandusky Perkins Firelands Regional Medical Center Stadium
EF: Norwalk
DP: Norwalk (11-0) by 2 (56%) vs Clyde (9-2)
CP: Clyde 28-21

Region 9

1 Dresden Tri-Valley (11-0) vs. 4 The Plains Athens (11-0) at Zanesville Sulsberger Stadium
EF: Athens
DP: Tri-Valley (Dresden) (11-0) by 3 (58%) vs Athens (The Plains) (11-0)
CP: Tri-Valley 38-35
*Huge, huge game. Athens has been looking to break through the regional barrier for a couple seasons now and this is the last shot for one of the state’s most talented teams (senior QB Joe Burrow headed to Ohio State, senior RB Trae Williams headed to Ohio). Tri-Valley has been on everyone’s radar since Day 1 and has been a legit contender to win this region since August. The key stats? Athens has scored 682 points this season and averages 62 points per game. Tri-Valley has given up 48 points in 11 games.

7 Columbus St. Francis DeSales (9-2) vs. 3 Jackson (11-0) at Chillicothe Herrnstein Field
