Frantz, Pasteur, CalPreps: Who We Say Wins (and Why) the D-I Regional Semifinals

EFvsDP

For the past four years playoff point guru Drew Pasteur and I have engaged in a friendly competition of playoff pick’em. His Formula vs My Feel. It’s been good fun and highly competitive. This season it continues. Here’s a look at who we think wins in Week 12. As for Week 11? We tied 94-18 each. That’s the second time in three years we’ve tied in the regional quarters. My key wins? Colerain, Mapleton and Columbus DeSales. DP’s big wins? Columbiana Crestview, Bowling Green and West Liberty-Salem.

As always, enjoy or destroy.

2014 D-I REGIONAL SEMIFINAL PICKS

Region 1

1 Hudson (11-0) vs. 8 Cleveland St. Ignatius (7-4) at Brunswick Judy Kirsch Field
EF: Hudson
DP: Hudson (11-0) by 7 (67%) vs St Ignatius (Cleveland) (7-4)
CP: Hudson 31-28
*Rematch of last year’s regional semifinal that St. Ignatius won 28-17. The Wildcats own 66 playoff wins, while the Explorers have six. No. 7 sure would be memorable.

4 Mentor (10-1) vs. 12 Canton GlenOak (8-3) at University of Akron InfoCision Stadium – Summa Field
EF: Mentor
DP: Mentor (10-1) by 20 (90%) vs GlenOak (Canton) (8-3)
CP: Mentor 42-17
*Mentor would love nothing more than another shot at Hudson. Surprising GlenOak stands in the way. Cardinals are a heavy favorite.

2 Lakewood St. Edward (9-2) vs. 7 Powell Olentangy Liberty (9-2) at Mansfield Arlin Field
EF: St. Edward
DP: St Edward (Lakewood) (9-2) by 22 (92%) vs Olentangy Liberty (Powell) (9-2)
CP: St. Edward 34-6
*St. Edward was once ranked No. 1 in the nation. That’s the kind of talent it has. Despite being a heavy underdog, Liberty has only lost to undefeated teams (Olentangy and Dublin Coffman) this season.

3 Westerville Central (10-1) vs. 6 Austintown-Fitch (8-2) at Canton Fawcett Stadium
EF: Westerville Central
DP: Austintown-Fitch (Youngstown) (8-2) by 1 (52%) vs Westerville Central (Westerville) (10-1)
CP: Westerville Central 31-28
*Rematch of last year’s regional semifinal that Fitch won 40-24.

Region 2

16 West Chester Lakota West (6-5) vs. 9 Liberty Township Lakota East (9-2) at Mason Dwire Field at Atrium Stadium
EF: Lakota East
DP: Lakota East (Liberty Township) (9-2) by 5 (61%) vs Lakota West (West Chester) (6-5)
CP: Lakota East 24-21
*Rematch of a Week 10 meeting that West won 24-7 to propel itself into the postseason. Both teams won last week as lower seeds. Combined the squads own just three total playoff wins.

4 Dublin Coffman (11-0) vs. 5 Huber Heights Wayne (10-1) at Bellefontaine AcuSport Stadium
EF: Wayne
DP: Wayne (Huber Heights) (10-1) by 3 (58%) vs Dublin Coffman (Dublin) (11-0)
CP: Wayne 31-26
*Rematch of last year’s regional semifinal that Wayne won 31-10. That Coffman team had four losses. This one is undefeated. Still, Wayne wins.  The Warriors are a legit threat for the regional title.

2 Cincinnati St. Xavier (9-2) vs. 10 Cincinnati Colerain (8-3) at Hamilton Virgil M. Schwarm Stadium
EF: St. Xavier
DP: St Xavier (Cincinnati) (9-2) by 8 (70%) vs Colerain (Cincinnati) (8-3)
CP: St. Xavier 31-17
*Early on people weren’t talking about either of these teams and if they were it was because they were a combined 5-5 after Week 5. Since then they’re a combined 12-0.

3 Pickerington Central (11-0) vs. 6 Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller (8-3) at Dayton Welcome Stadium
EF: Moeller
DP: Moeller (Cincinnati) (8-3) by 7 (67%) vs Pickerington Central (Pickerington) (11-0)
CP: Moeller 27-7
*After beating Gahanna Lincoln the last two weeks, Pick Central focuses on the two-time defending state champions. This will be the Tigers toughest test to date. Moeller stubbed it’s toe midseason and went 1-3 the first four weeks of October. Expect a low scoring game.
